The new U.S. headquarters for a high-tech training and simulation company is now showing some real results on the Tampa International Airport campus.

Construction of CAE USA’s new state-of-the-art facility is moving ahead.  The project was originally scheduled to begin construction in 2020, but started this year after pandemic delays. Structural components of buildings for manufacturing, a training center and corporate offices are being put in place at the site on Air Cargo Road between Crest and South avenues.

Crews began assembling the steel framework of the HQ building in November, with concrete slab foundations for all three buildings already at least partially poured, according to construction firm Barr & Barr. Concrete tilt panels for the walls of the manufacturing and training buildings are scheduled to be erected in mid-January, with pre-engineered metal buildings for the manufacturing and training structures to follow.

Charles Sumlin, CAE USA Group Leader for Facilities, said the manufacturing building is scheduled for completion in August 2023, with the other two buildings to follow no later than January 2024.

“This new facility complex will be a flagship location for CAE USA Defense and Security business operations worldwide,” Sumlin said.

CAE USA is a subsidiary of CAE Inc., a global leader in training for defense, civil aviation and healthcare markets. CAE USA is focused on developing and delivering training systems and services to the U.S. Department of Defense and other allied militaries around the world.

The company currently employs more than 500 in the Tampa Bay region and aims to create about 100 more jobs at the completed facility, which will be leased from the state aerospace economic development agency, Space Florida. The new positions will be in areas such as computer and software engineering, program management, training instructors, and corporate functions.

CAE USA has a total workforce of more than 2,000 employees.

The new facility was made possible through partnerships between CAE USA, Enterprise Florida, the Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corporation, Hillsborough County, City of Tampa, Space Florida, Tampa International Airport, Tampa Electric, CBRE and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
