Employee Spotlight: Delia Diaz, Records and Information Coordinator

April is Records and Information Management (RIM) Month, an annual reminder of the importance of safeguarding the documents and data that underpin every organization. At the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority, that responsibility rests with the Records and Information Management team, including Delia Diaz, Records and Information Coordinator, who also celebrates her third anniversary with the Authority this month.

Diaz plays a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity and accessibility of the Airport’s records, tracking everything from board meeting minutes to text messages.

“Every record tells a story,” Diaz said. “Each piece contributes to our history and helps us move forward without reinventing the wheel.”

Her work extends far beyond filing and archiving. Diaz manages dozens of public records requests at any given time, a process that requires balancing transparency with privacy and security under Florida’s rigorous public records laws.

“It can be challenging,” she said. “Public records law is always evolving, so there’s always something new to learn.”

A Tampa native, Diaz brings an academic background that perfectly complements her passion for preserving history. After earning an associate degree from Hillsborough Community College, she completed a bachelor’s degree in anthropology at the University of South Florida and later pursued a master’s degree in information.

“The airport is such an important part of Tampa’s story,” she said. “Preserving its origins, construction, and growth means preserving a piece of the community itself.”

Her fascination with history and culture also extends beyond work. Diaz loves to travel, and she recently visited Italy and is planning a trip to Greece. Outside of work, she loves spending time with her niece and is an avid knitter who enjoys creating handmade scarves, sweaters, and cardigans as gifts for friends, family, and even a few lucky coworkers.

“It’s a way to show love,” she said.

Diaz also enjoys gaming on her PC, exploring immersive worlds that help her unwind after busy days managing records.

When asked what makes the Aviation Authority a special place to work, Diaz points to the people.

“Everyone here is so supportive and kind,” she said. “It’s a great culture that encourages growth and collaboration.”

As part of RIM Month, Diaz reminds both employees and the public that the Records team is always available to assist.

Looking ahead, Diaz hopes to continue deepening her expertise in the field.

“I’m passionate about records and information management,” she said. “I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Through her work, Diaz helps ensure that the history of Tampa International Airport and the community it serves remains accessible, accurate, and alive for generations to come.
