Five reasons to visit Cancun, Mexico

Think of a place with clear blue waters, white sand beaches and an average annual temp of 80 degrees. Are you thinking Cancun, Mexico? Us too.

With JetBlue's nonstop flight to this Gulf Coast gem, you can get from your Airport gate to resort in less than two hours. The constant beautiful weather makes it the perfect vacation if you're looking for somewhere to social distance outdoors while enjoying the natural Zen that comes from waves crashing at your toes. Cancun isn’t all sand and saltwater, though. There’s plenty else to do like enjoy Mexican delicacies or check out some of the city’s best nightlife spots.

Here are five reasons to visit this city:

1. Beaches

With 5,800 miles of coastline, Cancun is home to more than 11 beautifully unique beaches for visitors to choose from. Check out Playa Chac Mool if you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing experience or visit Playa Delfines where locals guarantee a dolphin sighting or two (it’s in the name, folks.) If you’re looking for more of the resort experience with beachside restaurants, bars and umbrellas, visit Playa Norte Isla Mujeres. Of the 11, whichever you choose is guaranteed to be a distinct beach experience like no other.

2. The food

Say goodbye to your favorite local taco spot and hello to authentic Mexican cuisine. Home to the (dare we say) best ever tamales, tacos and empanadas, Cancun is as serious about its food as it is its beaches. Reserve a table for some fine dining at the highly rated Puerto Madero or eat like a local at La Troje. Got a sweet tooth? Try Marquesitas – cone-shaped thin waffles stuffed with chocolate or other savory ingredients – a delicacy that originated in the Yucatan Peninsula.

3. Adventures in nature

Diving, boating, zip lining or jungle-cruising – it’s all there in Cancun, Mexico. The city is sprinkled with natural parks like Xcaret Park, home to the Riviera Maya, with underground rivers, coral reefs and aviaries worth the 2-hour flight. Take your snorkel underwater at Xel Ha Ecological Park, the top snorkeling destination full of sea turtles and other marine life or visit Chankanaab Eco-Archaeological Park where you’ll get to explore some Mayan culture with ruins and beautiful views.

4. Museums and history

Cancun is rich with Mayan history and home to many famous, unique museums. Check out the Museo Maya de Cancún with a massive collection of Mayan Archaeology or go underwater at the Cancun Underwater Museum of Art where more than 500 life-size sculptures exist to promote coral reefs and house marine life. Bring the kids for a history lesson tied into the family fun.

5. Nightlife

Looking to let loose in a city where (probably) no one knows you? Cancun is known for its thriving nightlife with hundreds of bars, nightclubs and casinos in the city's Hotel Zone. Check out The City Cancun - the largest nightclub by area or Dady'O Cancun which holds 80's and 90's parties every weekend. Not trying to stay out til the sunrise? Try Señor Frogs for a bite to eat before the late night hours. Looking for some fun outside the city, take a 2-hour ride to Tulum where the parties literally don't stop.

Before you book, passengers and crew may be subject to health screening upon arrival. A negative COVID-19 test is required and there may be some restrictions on intercity travel.

Our suggestions: get tested before you travel, wear a face covering whenever inside or unable to keep a 6-foot distance and DON'T travel if you're feeling sick.
