Jane Doggett, creator of TPA logo and signage, inducted into hall of fame

(Feb. 18, 2016) When Jane Davis Doggett was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame earlier this month, it had special significance for Tampa International Airport. 

Doggett, 86, is the artist and designer credited with creating the TPA logo and original wayfinding system during the late 1960s when the revolutionary spoke-and-hub structure was built. It’s a system that still serves the Airport well today and plays a big role in enhancing the user-friendly customer experience for which TPA is known.

“I knew Tampa International Airport was going to be a gateway to a great place, and I wanted it to have a very Florida atmosphere,” Doggett said from her Jupiter Island home after the induction ceremony. “I put a little bit of orange in the red and a little bit of green in the blue to account for colorblindness.”

Doggett recalled sitting in many planning meetings with George J. Bean and a relatively young and innovative staff of architects, planners and engineers. Tampa’s airport had so many firsts and they all knew they were a part of something special.

“We were all young and eager, too young to be afraid of failure,” she said.

Doggett said she has been following TPA’s historic expansion progress with much interest and is excited to see her color scheme ideas and designs live on, even as the Airport grows and redevelops.
