Local girls visit TPA to learn about careers in aviation

Campers from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay had the opportunity to tour Tampa International Airport's airfield and go behind the scenes to experience the Main Terminal's inner workings.

A group of 15 female students from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay spent the day at Tampa International Airport in late June for a behind the scenes tour of TPA's airfield, Main Terminal and General Aviation hangers. The special visit was part of the first-ever Girls Achieving Leadership in Aviation (GALA) Summer Camp hosted by the Florida Aerospace Training Center, funded by money raised at Tampa International Airport's annual GALA event honoring women in aviation.

Throughout the week, the girls were introduced to a variety of careers in the heavily male-dominated field of aviation. They had the chance to experience a flight simulator at Aero Simulation, learned all about flying drones at Tampa Executive Airport and learned about possible careers offered by many Fixed Based Operators on their visit to Signature Flight Support, the week’s presenting sponsor.

Tampa International Airport’s GALA Event, presented by the Tampa Bay Aviation Association, takes place each spring at the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority’s Peter O. Knight Airport near downtown Tampa. In addition to the GALA Summer Camp, the event also helps raise money for scholarships to help pay for schooling or flight training for women looking to enter the field of aviation.

A big thank you to all of the sponsors who helped make this amazing learning experience possible.
