Alaska Airlines will soon operate its first-ever daily nonstop flights between TPA and PDX. Previously, the airline offered this route on Saturdays only. The increased service will be available through March 28, 2027.

I grew up in a small town in Kansas where the nearest airport was a 50-mile drive – and even once you got to that airport, going anywhere else usually meant having to take a connecting flight. To now live only minutes away from Tampa International Airport and have the ability to fly to Zurich without a stop? It still blows my mind.

In December 2025, I had the chance to take Edelweiss Air's nonstop flight from TPA to Zurich (ZRH) for a quick three-day jaunt to Switzerland. Notably, this trip marked my first time flying on an Airbus A350 and it felt like the perfect aircraft for a special trip like this. 

Edelweiss recently upgraded the TPA to ZRH route with the A350, meaning that this airline now offers more seats aboard an aircraft – 339 – than any other airline serving TPA. After checking in and waiting at the gate for its arrival, the impressive A350 turned heads when it pulled up. Passengers buzzing with excitement lined the Airport windows and lifted their phones to grab photos as it pulled into the gate.

Upon boarding, I settled into my seat in Economy Max, an upgraded Edelweiss section that offered plenty of legroom, a soft blanket and a pillow. Hearing announcements in both German and English made this trip feel real – I was officially on my way to Switzerland, one of my favorite destinations. 

Immediately after takeoff, the level of quiet in the cabin achieved by the A350's design surprised me. Once we reached our cruising altitude, dinner followed: beef with potatoes, a salad and a small cinnamon dessert. It was simple, comforting and delicious. While Edelweiss doesn’t offer Wi-Fi onboard, they do have a wide variety of movies and shows available, more than enough to help the eight-hour flight zoom by. 

I was able to doze a bit as I made my way across the Atlantic, and breakfast was served hours later as the sun began to rise. I soon saw the Alps appearing on the horizon and couldn't help but smile at their beauty. After crossing nearly 5,000 miles, I touched down in Zurich, ready to explore and experience some winter weather.

Clearing customs took less than five minutes. I'd decided to hit the ground running by first making my way up into the mountains before spending time in Zurich itself. With a coffee in hand, I began the next part of my journey with a 3.5-hour multi-train ride to the dreamy small town of Zermatt. 

With a Swiss Rail Pass, this trek was seamless; I didn't need to print any tickets ahead of time and used their onboard QR code check-in. I did have to change trains twice, but I was easily able to make those connections. Pro tip: Do NOT dawdle at a station, as Swiss trains often run on time (Swiss watches have a reputation for a reason).

The scenery outside my train's window soon began to transform. I passed through the aptly-named town of St. Niklaus as the train climbed higher into the mountains past green fields and chalets. When the Alps came fully into view, it felt like I could shake off my travel fatigue and prepare for the adventures ahead. 

It wasn't long before the train pulled into the station in Zermatt, my home for the next two nights. I walked the short distance to my hotel, Resort La Ginabelle. After quickly unpacking, I stepped outside and there it was – the Matterhorn, towering, unmistakable and completely unreal. My jaw almost hit the ground in awe. 

I wandered through this small car-free town, stopping at the Lindt shop for a free sample (I would return the next day for another). Then, I made my way up to Mürini Hill to watch as the sun slowly dipped behind the 14,692-foot Matterhorn. As the the village began to glow below me, people gathered quietly on the small ridge, taking photos and gazing at the sparkling town lights. Zermatt looked like it was right out of a snow globe (or a Hallmark movie).  

That evening, I grabbed a quick dinner, admired the Christmas lights and ended the night in my hotel’s geothermal pool, which was exactly what I needed to reset and begin to wind down.

The next morning, I awoke to fulfill one of my lifelong dreams – skiing in Switzerland. While I'd had the opportunity to visit this beautiful country three times prior to this visit, I'd never taken advantage of the amazing slopes the Alps offer. 

It was time for that to change. 

Before I made my way to ski, I fueled up with a big breakfast at the hotel (we won't talk about all the cheese I ate). I then crossed the street to pick up ski equipment from Matterhorn Sport and, after being fitted, I walked just a few steps to the nearby entrance to Matterhorn Ski Paradise, a resort that's open all year. Talk about convenient! 

The real kicker? I bought a one-day lift ticket on the spot that was considerably more affordable than the prices many ski resorts charge in the United States. And there wasn't even a line to purchase the ticket or get on the lift! 

Before I knew it, I was gliding down the slopes with the Matterhorn in plain sight. The wind whooshed past me and the sky was clear. My emotions caught up to me as I made my way down one of my first runs and I felt incredibly grateful to finally achieve this bucket-list goal.

I made a refueling stop at Buffet Bar Sunnegga for a break before getting up my courage to attempt a more advanced slope. My limited skiing capabilities quickly caught up to me, however, and I took a very careful ride down. Lesson learned. 

Speaking of refueling, one of my favorite stops while on the slopes was Chez Vrony, an outdoor mountainside restaurant with cozy seating, blankets and sweeping views. They were sold out of their fondue, but a cappuccino and the surrounding views were more than enough.

I only had one full day in Zermatt, so with daylight still left, I decided to return my ski gear and set out for an afternoon adventure aboard the Gornergrat Railway. This train ride became one of the highlights of the year for me. Thanks to my Swiss Rail Pass, I received a discount on my fare and the nearly-empty train gave me uninterrupted views of the Alps. The train climbed about 10,000 feet in roughly 30 minutes. I spent most of the ride leaning out the window, completely enthralled by the scenery. 

After reaching the summit, I wandered around the observation area as the sun sank lower and eventually disappeared behind the mountains. The Matterhorn stood apart from its towering neighbors, impossible to miss. A fun fact for my geography friends: From the summit, I was only a few miles away from the Italian border. This entire experience at the top felt very cinematic, with rugged terrain and helicopters buzzing below, almost like being in a James Bond movie.

Eventually, I headed back down the mountain, already knowing this train ride would be a standout memory in an already standout day. As the temperature in town dropped to 0° C, I stopped for a rich hot chocolate at Petit Royal, the perfect way to warm up and thaw out. 

To make up for the missing fondue from earlier in the day, I finally snagged some at Old Zermatt, a restaurant located just down the street from my hotel. I quickly got to dipping with potatoes, meat and even pickles. The bubbling pot and open flame made it a perfect way to end an iconic day.

The next morning, I packed up and boarded the train bound for Zurich. With only one night left, I decided to stay at a hotel near the airport instead of in the city for convenience. After checking in, I quickly made my way to sightsee and visit as many of Zurich's famous Christmas markets as possible. 

My first stop in the city was to the Christmas market at Sechseläutenplatz and it did not disappoint. The air was filled with the smell of crepes, churros, raclette (more on that later) and so much more. Entry to this market was free, but resisting the temptation to spend every penny I had on delicious food was difficult.

I started with fish tacos at Los Autenticos – an unexpected yet delicious choice – then tried raclette for the first time. What is raclette, you may ask? Think of a hot, gooey cheese poured over potatoes. (Also, I'm not responsible if that last sentence made you feel hungry). 

I then walked down Bahnhofstrasse, perfect for shopping or window-gazing. Luxury storefronts lined the wide street and as night began to fall, sparkling lights overhead transformed this district into something magical. From there, I made my way up a small incline to Lindenhof which offered a stunning viewpoint over the city.

Up next? Two back-to-back Christmas markets! First, I went to the Polarzauber at Zurich Main Railway Station, which was complete with a photo-worthy sleigh and endless vendors. I opted for some coffee from Yardbird and wandered around before visiting the nearby Swiss National Museum’s Illuminarium nearby. Fires crackled, people gathered with warm drinks and laughter echoed throughout the outdoor space. As was the case with the first market I visited, both of these markets were free as well and required no tickets for entry. 

Craving a taste of home, I ended the night with a custom pizza at Sam’s Pizza Land. I then followed the sound of music and discovered a singing Christmas tree, filled with a live choir. Even on a weekday night, the energy from the crowd was contagious and it again felt like my surroundings would be the perfect setting for a movie. 

Departure day was upon me and I arrived at Zurich Airport with plenty of time before my flight back to Tampa. Pro tip: If you're checking a bag, print out your baggage tag at one of the self-serve kiosks and use the self bag drop instead of waiting for an agent. I quickly cleared security and breezed through passport control. 

After boarding, I took my seat in Economy Max. I lucked out and had an entire row to myself! As we lifted off and the Alps faded into the distance, I felt ready to return home, but grateful for every moment this quick trip provided me.

There’s nothing quite like traveling to a new destination, especially when it’s an adventure to Panama City, Panama – known as the “Crossroads of the World” for its vital location between North and South America and the famously important Panama Canal.

I recently flew nonstop from TPA to Tocumen International Airport (PTY) aboard Copa Airlines, which has been operating at TPA since 2013. The airline recently increased service to PTY to 12 nonstop flights a week from Tampa International Airport.

Copa has also made it easy for Tampa Bay travelers to explore Panama, even if their final destination is elsewhere. They provide a complimentary stopover program with all sorts of hotel, restaurant and activity deals for passengers who are connecting through PTY to any of 47 Latin American and Caribbean destinations.

For context, I’ve been on a personal quest to visit as many countries as I can, and I hadn't yet made it to Panama. This trip would mark my first visit to Central America, bringing my personal “countries visited" tally up to 42. It would be a short trip, less than 48 hours on the ground, and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I was excited to try out Copa Airlines and explore this unique city.

After I breezed through check-in and security at TPA, Copa was kind enough to upgrade me to a business class seat for the less than three-hour flight from TPA to PTY. I was able to kick back, relax and enjoy the delicious onboard meal of beef, rice and salad once we had taken off. While Wi-Fi service isn't currently offered aboard Copa, the airline offered plenty of movies and shows to help pass the time.

As I descended into PTY, nicknamed the Hub of the Americas, thunderstorms limited the views out over the city, but the mood of the passengers onboard couldn’t have been brighter. Applause broke out once we touched down.

Clearing customs took less than five minutes and before I knew it, I was in the back of an Uber, heading toward the stunning modern skyline of Panama City. To me, this city felt like an impressive mix of Miami and Dubai, with gleaming skyscrapers soaring high above the Gulf of Panama.

After settling in at my hotel, I walked over to the sophisticated Azahar restaurant for dinner on their outdoor patio, which provided stunning views of the water to go along with their delicious shrimp bisque and truffle fries. I enjoyed the view and the food before calling it a night.

The following morning, I hit the ground running. With only one full day in Panama City, I wanted to see as much as possible. The rainy morning didn’t stop me from exploring. My first stop was getting intentionally lost in Casco Antiguo (also known as Casco Viejo), a historic district that is home to some of the oldest parts of the city. From brightly colored buildings to bakeries with amazing pastries to stores offering iconic woven-straw Panama hats, it was clear to me why this district was popular. I took a coffee break at Sisu Coffee Studio, where a gorgeous interior and delicious latte awaited me.

As the lunch hour approached, I made my way to the Miraflores Visitor Center, home to a unique Panama Canal experience featuring an IMAX theater, observation deck and guided tour. Thousands of visitors come each day to see this engineering marvel, which employs nearly 9,000 people. I met up with my guide who took me up close to the locks, telling me that 35 to 40 ships pass through the Canal every day. I then watched in awe as one large ship after another was slowly lowered from one lock to the next, making their way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean with small electric locomotive-like machines known as mules helping keep them centered within the lock's boundaries.

After several hours at the Canal, I returned to Panama City for a long walk along the water, admiring the skyscrapers and discovering beautiful outdoor art installations. I eventually made my way to pastry and coffee bar Athanasiou for another fuel-up before settling in for dinner at Tántalo, one of the many rooftop restaurants in Casco Antiguo. As the sun went down and the city lights began to glow, I sneaked over to Granclemént for a delicious scoop of gourmet ice cream.

It was already time to go, so the following morning I packed up and Ubered back to Tocumen International Airport. I checked in at the Copa ticket counter and cleared security in less than 15 minutes.

Terminal 2 at PTY was impressive, with high ceilings and a wide variety of retail and dining options. It was very clean and the staff I encountered were friendly and helpful. I settled in at the Copa Club, an amazing lounge located on the terminal’s second floor, featuring beautiful views out over the concourse and the airfield. This lounge, available to select travelers, offers hot showers, movie theater-style seating, plenty of food and much more. It made the wait for my departure incredibly easy and comfortable.

I then boarded my two-and-a-half-hour flight back home. I was in Copa's Economy Extra class for this leg of the trip and found my seat to be quite comfortable, with plenty of legroom. Copa is often ranked as one of the most on-time airlines in the world, and I’d agree. Before I knew it, we were touching down at TPA nearly 30 minutes ahead of schedule.

It was a fast but fabulous jaunt to Panama’s capital, making the easy trip worthwhile. I'd love to visit again and spend more time exploring all that this amazing country has to offer. The Sunshine State is full of tourist hot spots, but few evoke such a sense of place with out-of-state visitors and Florida residents as Key West.

Laid-back vibes and local lore abound in the Conch Republic, so-named for a minute-long, mock secession from the United States in 1982. It’s a place where people go to get away from it all – including Floridians looking for a quick change of pace.

Getting there was simple enough: When Breeze Airways began its nonstop route from TPA to Key West International Airport in June, my wife Stephanie and I scooped up tickets for a long summer weekend without our child, who was away on an overseas trip. We were looking to take it as easy as we could for three nights of grownup fun, packing a single bag each and not making any plans beyond our hotel reservation.

The flight was easy, lasting less than an hour in the air before rolling up to the airport’s newly renovated passenger terminal. We skipped renting a car and took a quick ride from the airport to our hotel, the excellent La Concha Key West on Duval Street, in the heart of all the touristy fun. The six-story building opened in 1926 and hosted guests like Ernest Hemingway (more on him in a moment), President Harry S Truman and Tennessee Williams, whom the hotel says completed A Streetcar Named Desire while staying here.

Literary legends have some storied history on the island, with countless writers living on or being inspired by Key West, making for some great bookish tourism. Robert Frost wintered on the island for many years. Current resident Judy Blume owns a small bookstore, Books and Books @ The Studios of Key West, just down the road from La Concha. Shel Silverstein died in his longtime home on William Street.

And Hemingway … well, let’s just say you can’t go anywhere without seeing some reference to Hemingway, whose larger-than-life personality dominated the island for years. He fished off his famous boat Pilar (a nickname for his second wife, Pauline) in the waters nearby, and many of the people he knew on Key West made their way into his novel To Have and Have Not.

The Hemingway Home and Museum is a must-see, even if only to check out the famous six-toed cats that to this day lounge about the grounds on Whitehead Street. Hemingway lived here in the 1930s with Pauline until they eventually divorced in 1940. Tour guides dish on this tumultuous tale with plenty of juicy details, including the story of how an angry Pauline built the only in-ground swimming pool within 100 miles with her husband’s last penny, which is still pressed into the concrete pool deck.  

And since we’re talking about Hemingway, we simply must discuss bars. The famous Sloppy Joe’s Bar, the hangout where Ernest met his third wife Martha, gets plenty of visitors even among Duval’s numerous watering holes, thanks to its rich history. The Green Parrot Bar has been a local landmark since originally opening as a grocery store in 1890. And on the basis of strong drinks per square foot, no other establishment can top the tiny Rum Bar at the Speakeasy Inn, where you can hammer a mean daiquiri or sip a rum flight before heading to one of this LGBTQ+-friendly town’s raucous and fun-loving drag shows at the 801 Bourbon Bar or Aqua Bar’s Birdcage Cabaret.

At some point you’re going to want to get some food, which on Key West is much more than conch fritters and the catch of the day. Fighting the throngs at the Southernmost Point marker on South and Whitehead streets or wandering through the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory can really activate your appetite.

The Hemingway Home tour guide noted that Ernest allegedly frequented a brothel a couple of blocks away that now houses the tasty alfresco eatery Blue Heaven, which is now filled with live music and Key West’s ubiquitous free-range chickens, as well as a stellar Key Lime pie. First Flight Island Restaurant and Brewery makes its own beer and has good bar food, leaning into the building’s history as the first ticket office for Pan American World Airways in 1927. Perhaps the most affordable late-night option is ordering a custom slice at Angelina’s Pizzeria near the Rick’s Bar megaplex.

While packing up to leave, my wife and I discussed the things we simply hadn’t had time to do: No snorkeling, no glass-bottomed boats, no treks to see the splendor of local wildlife. We had barely scratched the surface of Key West.

It’s a good thing it’s so easy for us to come back.

I've had the chance to visit Mexico many times over the last several years, but each of those visits was limited to coastal areas. When Aeromexico offered up the opportunity to fly me down to the heart of Mexico, I jumped at the chance to explore this capital city. I'm always down for an adventure, so I packed my bag and prepared for a new experience. 

HOW TO GET THERE (AND BACK): Aeromexico launched daily nonstop flights from TPA to MEX in July 2024 and has carried thousands of passengers between Tampa Bay and Mexico's capital since. For this journey and my first flights with them, Aeromexico hooked me up with seats in the AM Plus cabin. These seats are located at the front of the main cabin and offered ample legroom just behind Aeromexico's top-tier Clase Premier. Each seat on the aircraft offers a USB port, an inflight entertainment screen with plenty of options and Bluetooth-pairing technology. After breezing through security both at TPA and MEX, we took off for the less than 3-hour journey. On both flights, I purchased the $8 WiFi pass (each way) and was pleased with how fast and efficient the WiFi speeds were. Aeromexico also offers complimentary in-flight messaging, so staying connected with my work and home life was a breeze. 

WHERE TO STAY: Mexico City is the largest city in North America, so trying to narrow down where to stay took a bit of research ahead of my visit. Ultimately, I settled on staying at the Umbral, a Curio Collection property in the heart of the city's historic Centro district. This boutique hotel has a small number of rooms, which meant the staff was incredibly attentive and helpful. Plus, this property was just steps away from Zócalo, the central square of the city, and boasted easy walking access to many of the main attractions. With a rooftop pool and a unique design, I couldn't have asked for a better spot to call “home” during my visit. 

WHAT TO DO: The options for things to do and attractions to see abound in Mexico City. Here are a few I'd recommend: 

• Wander through the Centro Histórico district: I kicked off my first day with a very short walk to Zócalo, a beautiful plaza filled with everything from street vendors to a popup pickleball tournament. Tourists wandered around taking tons of photos of the beautiful architecture and buildings. On one side of the plaza, I stepped inside the Catedral Metropolitana, a Catholic church with soaring ceilings and ornate details. Then I made my way to the Palacio de Bellas Artes, an incredible structure that serves as a cultural home for Mexico City, hosting performing arts and literary events. I'd highly recommend stopping here. To wrap up my time in this area, I visited Palacio Postal, just two blocks from the Palacio de Bellas Artes. This incredible structure, built in the early 1900s, is part museum, part functioning post office. For less than $3 for a ticket, I thought I'd give it a try and was amazed as I wandered through room after room filled with exhibits. They’ll even give you a souvenir stamp to take home!
   
• Explore Chapultepec Castle: Home to amazing art and sweeping views of Mexico City, I would make sure a visit to Chapultepec Castle is high on your list. For less than $5, a visit to this amazing site (a 19th century summer home for the local Spanish colonial viceroy at the time) is all yours. There was quite a hike up to the castle, so I'd recommend visiting earlier in the day to beat the midday and afternoon heat. Once I made it to the top, the views out over the city below and the amazing exhibits inside were 100% worth the hike. One could easily spend most or all of an entire day here exploring and learning about Mexico’s history.
   
• Go sky-high in a hot air balloon tour: Out of all of the adventures I've done in my entire life, this one ranks pretty high up on the “intimidating” list. I booked a sunrise hot air balloon tour from Volare. While my nerves almost got the best of me, I'm so thankful I did it. After waking up at 4 a.m. for an early morning pickup, we made our way through the dark streets of Mexico City. After 45 minutes of travel, we arrived at Teotihuacan and I watched as the balloons began to rise up into the sky all around me. I leaped in over the side of our balloon's basket and found my spot. Soon, I heard the rocks scraping against the bottom of the basket as we began to lift off into the sky. Once airborne, much of my fear drifted away and I gawked at the views below. We flew near the ancient pyramids, one of which was constructed nearly 2,000 years ago. My ears popped as we got higher and higher, nearing 10,000 feet. We were surrounded by cool air and even cooler views below. Before I knew it, our ride in the sky was over. We landed with a thud and I was so thankful to have my feet back on solid ground. Afterward, Volare treated us to a full breakfast with a mariachi band. Pro tip: Be sure to layer up, wear sunscreen, have sunglasses and pack a little courage.
   
• Immerse yourself in culture at Mercado de Coyoacán: This large indoor shopping area is a sensory overload and offers everything from potted plants and souvenirs to fresh food and clothing. It was an incredible display of color and creativity. As I wandered the market, I was constantly greeted with the delicious smells of all kinds of snacks and treats. The aisles are quite tight, so stay close with anybody you’re traveling with. 
   
• Cruise and party at Xochimilco: Famous for its canals and colorful gondolas, one of the last stops on my trip was to Xochimilco. If you plan to go for a cruise through the canals, I'd recommend booking your ticket ahead of time. I opted to do some souvenir shopping at the Embarcadero Nativitas, one of the gateways to the famed gondolas, as happy chatter and live music filled the air. 

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK: In a city with thousands of options, I felt a bit overwhelmed narrowing down where to go. Here are a few of my favorite spots: 

• Terraza Cha Cha Cha: Oh. My. Goodness. Out of all the places I ate (or snacked) in Mexico City, this rooftop spot was my favorite. With amazing views of the Monumento a la Revolución and guacamole to write home about, you won't want to miss Terraza. In addition to the guacamole, I warmed up with steak tacos and finished with shrimp enchiladas. The vibes and music were just stellar, so be sure to make a reservation ahead of time and enjoy! 
   
• Nueve Nueve Bistro: Say hello to an outdoor paradise. Located in the trendy Roma Norte neighborhood, I settled in for a dinner complete with shrimp tacos and chicken mole. The atmosphere was upscale yet relaxed, and I found an amazing menu filled with a wide variety of options. 
   
• Balcón del Zócalo: Looking for a spot with a great view? Look no further! Balcón del Zócalo was just steps away from my hotel and featured a beautiful open terrace with views of Zócalo. I ordered a Toronja Romero mocktail and tried tlayuda, a traditional Oaxacan dish similar to a pizza. It was an airy and rich sensory delight. 10/10 would order that dish again!
   
• Churrería el Moro: A visit to Mexico City isn't complete without stopping for some churros. Luckily for me, I found Churrería el Moro, a chain of churro shops located throughout the city. For just a few bucks, I was soon in possession of several of the lengthy and sugar-coated treats. I can neither confirm nor deny the number of churros I consumed. 
   
• Finca Don Porfirio: Across the street from the Palacio de Bellas Artes is a Sears (yes, Sears!) building with an 8th floor cafe you shouldn't miss. Say hello to Finca Don Porfirio, an incredible spot perched up high. With coffee to match its amazing views, you must add this spot to your itinerary. I ordered a Mazapan latte and watched as tourists below made their way through the city.
   
• Cafe Milou: Speaking of coffee, be sure to add this beautiful cafe to your list. Cafe Milou is a short walk away from Chapultepec Castle, so I'd recommend grabbing an outdoor seat and resting here for a while. The iced latte I consumed in short order? Delicious! 

FINAL THOUGHTS: I didn't know quite what to expect during my first visit to Mexico City, but it was a thrilling visit to the capital city. In just two full days, I found myself able to get a feel for the amazing culture and pulsating energy for which this city is known.

I have to admit something. I've flown all over the world, recently hitting the 40-country mark, and I’ve had the privilege of flying in and out of TPA since I was a teenager. But I must confess, I’ve never flown nonstop out of TPA to Europe before. I’ve always connected through another hub somewhere, or have only caught a nonstop flight on my way back from Europe. 

That all changed recently when I took one of the first nonstop flights from TPA to Amsterdam aboard Delta Air Lines. The airline, which recently brought back daily nonstop flights after a five-year hiatus, gave me the chance to try out its onboard experience and visit one of the coolest cities on the planet.

To start my journey, I checked in at the Delta ticket counter in TPA's Main Terminal and breezed through security before settling into Delta Sky Club at Airside E. It was the perfect place to relax, grab a bite to eat and enjoy a very relaxing space ahead of my overnight trek across the Atlantic. 

Before even leaving the ground, the hospitality and kindness of the Delta agents truly stood out. Each of them went above and beyond to make my time at my home airport comfortable and smooth.

After boarding, I found my spot in seat 20G. This was a bulkhead seat in the first row of Delta’s Premium Select cabin, which offers an elevated experience from its Comfort Plus offering. 

The seat was large, comfortable and felt like a domestic first class seat. The amenity kit, which contained everything from ear plugs to lip balm to an eye mask, was such a nice touch – as was the blanket, pillow and water bottle waiting for me. The flight attendant cheerily told us that we’d be friends for the next 8 hours and 21 minutes and the onboard lights dimmed as we pushed back from Gate E65, 

Shortly after takeoff, I decided to purchase Delta's onboard Wi-Fi for $15, which kept me connected during the flight and helped make the time pass quickly.

A white napkin was draped gracefully across my wide tray table for dinner, and soon I was feasting on a delicious chicken dinner with a salad and a brownie.

I normally have a difficult time sleeping on planes, but with a comfortable seat like the one I had and a stomach now full of good food, it made it much easier to drift off to catch a little shuteye.  

About an hour before landing, breakfast was served, featuring a delicious spread with French toast, sausage, yogurt and a croissant.

After landing in Amsterdam almost a half-hour early, I cleared customs at Schiphol Airport in less than 15 minutes. I walked outside to take photos of the large “I AMSTERDAM” sign before catching a ride to my hotel and setting out to explore the city. 

This was my third visit to the city, but it was my first time staying for an entire long weekend. My first stop? Breakfast. I walked to Omelegg in the City Centre. When I arrived and saw the line stretching out the door, I hoped I was in for a treat. (Spoiler alert? I was.) A Biscoff cookie and a hot cup of coffee were on my table before I knew it and soon, I was wolfing down a delicious salmon avocado omelette.

From there, I started to wander around Amsterdam’s central area, where many of the streets and canals form a giant “U” shape. Be aware of the thousands of bicyclists – they rule the roads (and the sidewalks, too).

One of my first stops was the Bloemenmarkt Flower Market, a must-see in town. Tulips and souvenirs lined the stalls. I continued to meander around town, taking in all the beautiful holiday décor along streets filled with holiday shoppers scurrying about. 

If you’re looking to take photos that scream Amsterdam, head to Papiermolensluis Brug 57 – a spot near the flower market offering a beautiful wide view of the canals and the bicyclists zooming by. Places for coffee and tea abound, so feel free to stop by one and soak up the views.

I decided to wind down with a dinner at The Seafood Bar, which was the perfect place to grab a bite to eat. I chose a delicious seafood platter with a side of potatoes and soaked up the ambiance with dinner.

To wrap up my first evening, I made my way to Melly’s Stroopwafels for a hot chocolate and of course, a stroopwafel. Be sure you don’t miss out on grabbing one (or two) of these tasty treats while in town. After hours of walking and exploring, I was sold on a stroopwafel with Biscoff crumbles on top to wrap up my first day in Amsterdam.

The next day I walked from my hotel near Amsterdam Centraal to the central rail and bus station nearby. Amsterdam has a very efficient network of public transportation that is reliable and cost-effective. You can tap in and out with your credit card, which will automatically calculate what you owe.

I decided to spend part of this new day at Zaanse Schans in nearby Zaandam, home of giant windmills, clogs and more. This area is walkable and free, filled with shops and restaurants and places to grab photos. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to wander around and indulge in a snack or two. Pro tip: arrive earlier in the morning to beat the busloads of tourists that are sure to arrive around 10 or 11 a.m. 

After marveling at the large windmills, I decided to go inside one for a tour. The De Kat windmill could not have been more charming, and for about $6, it turned out to be one of my favorite attractions of the entire trip. Once inside, I climbed up steep stairs (almost straight up) and stopped to watch the inner-workings of the windmill. The wooden gears turned and spun, keeping the large windmill going. An upper deck provided a view out over the entire area. 

Nearby was a cheese shop and a wooden clog workshop where you may sample the numerous cheeses and, if you’re lucky, watch the locals carve wooden shoes. You can even get a pair of your own clogs painted by hand.

For lunch, Blue Amsterdam is known for its high views over the city, and while seating is limited if first-come, first-served, I was lucky to score a table right next to the window. 

To work off some of that food, head to the De Negen Straatjes and Jordaan areas of the city, known for beautiful canals and charming homes. While admiring the architecture, I picked up one of the best iced lattes I've ever had at the Coffee Company.

I took a canal cruise before wrapping up this very full day in Amsterdam. This is a must-do, since the canals are such an integral part of the Amsterdam experience. I boarded the Lovers canal cruise, an hour-long ride around town with a guide who gave interesting insights into the city, for less than $20. 

I was in the mood for pizza after disembarking, so I stopped by Bella Ciao Amsterdam, a small pizza restaurant near my hotel. I was tempted by the calzone without knowing it would be enough food for two people! 

I decided to visit several of Amsterdam's famous museums for my final full day in the city. I recommend reserving tickets to any of the museums well in advance. 

The Anne Frank Huis is one of the most famous museums in town and tickets quickly sell out, sometimes weeks ahead of time, as was the case while I was traveling. Luckily I’ve had the privilege of visiting this museum on a previous trip and found it to be sobering, eye-opening and well worth anyone’s time.  

I decided to spend about half a day around Museumplatz, home to several museums including the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. Either one is worth a full day's visit, but I split my day with both.

The Van Gogh Museum boasts three floors, dividing Vincent Van Gogh’s life into three distinct parts and exploring artifacts and works from each period. Guided and audio tours are available, but I opted for the self-guided option. It was amazing to experience his paintings in person after previously only seeing them in books.  

I stopped for coffee at the Kiosk Rembrandt Van Gogh for a quick cappuccino before heading to the neighboring Rijksmuseum, the national museum dedicated to Dutch arts and history. 

Even the building’s architecture was impressive, with soaring ceilings that led me upstairs to marvel at the work of Rembrandt and other amazing artists. I even discovered a library space filled with floors of books. Similar to the Van Gogh Museum, the floors of Rijksmuseum were divided up by time periods and offered corresponding pieces from each era, from ancient works to modern art. 

Up next? A stop at Stroopperie for (you guessed it) another stroopwafel, this one covered with Nutella and made right in front of me!

I then went for a long walk along one of my favorite canals, Prinsengracht, where the homes are stately and simply stunning. Since the weather was cooperating with a clear sky and plenty of warm sunshine, I worked up the courage to rent a bike and pedal my way around town. This experience ended up being one of the most memorable, traveling through town like the locals do. I’d recommend keeping your head on a swivel, though, because you certainly won’t be the only one on a bike. 

Forget Five Guys: say hello to Frites Huys! I hopped off my bike for some famous Dutch fries (a.k.a. frites) and fried cheeseballs (bitterballen). To try to blend in as a local, I added mayonnaise (which I typically don't eat) to the cone full of hot frites and devoured it all. 

Finally, I settled in at Haven van Texel, one of the many cozy, canal-front cafes, for my last dinner in the city. Heaters made the chilly outdoor seating comfortable and I ordered halibut and fresh veggies to counter all the frites and stroopwafels I'd eaten. 

I had a Delta One seat for my flight back to Tampa, granting me access to the priority Delta/KLM check-in area at Schiphol Airport. I walked right to a gate agent and was sent to a priority security screening checkpoint where security took less than 10 minutes to clear. I then made my way to the KLM Crown Lounge, which had two floors and offered everything from dining to entertainment to showers.  

I was one of the first to board and reach my seat, 5J, at the front of Delta's Airbus A330-300 aircraft. This fully lay-flat seat offered plenty of privacy and comfort, boasting both aisle and window access (with two windows). An amenity kit, large pillow, slippers and headphones were also waiting for me. This seat offered a USB port and a standard outlet, plus a larger screen for entertainment. 

Before takeoff, one of the pilots came through our cabin and welcomed each passenger. I managed to score a trading card from them before we took off on our scheduled 9-hour and 8-minute trek back home. I again purchased the Wi-Fi, which was quite fast, with download speeds of over 45 MB per second, making it easy to browse, send emails and scroll social media.

The food served in Delta One was a cut above, from salmon to braised short rib to Thai coconut soup to an apple tart (and some warm chocolate chip cookies served after lunch). I was able to lay my Delta One seat all the way back, propping myself up with the pillow while stretching out. The experience felt like I was on a couch and not traveling in an airplane – a truly great way to fly. 

We arrived approximately 35 minutes ahead of schedule back at America’s Favorite Airport. I used CBP’s Global Entry app for the first time upon arrival; for travelers with Global Entry, the app allows you to bypass the check-in kiosks and go straight to an agent. Using a timer from the moment I disembarked from the plane, I cleared customs in seven minutes. Now that is the way to know you're back in Tampa Bay!

Nice and easy! Flying with Breeze for the first time: I'm always excited when offered a chance to visit California, especially when it's a trip to Orange County. With Breeze Airways' new nonstop service between TPA and Santa Ana's John Wayne Airport (SNA), I was thrilled to hop on board and be one of the first passengers on the inaugural flight.

This flight was also of particular interest to me as it was my first time flying with Breeze. The airline, which began flying at TPA in 2021, has quickly grown its network and now offers 22 nonstop destinations from Tampa. Having the opportunity to experience a new airline for me only added to the excitement of the trip. 

After checking in on the Breeze mobile app, my carry-on bag and I skated through security and went right to my gate. Breeze hooked me up with a seat in its Ascent cabin, which (for a long, five-hour flight) offered the perfect amount of legroom. The seat was incredibly comfortable and offered a chance to kick back and relax. Plus, this Airbus A220 aircraft featured tons of charging ports at my seat and large restrooms. I was already impressed with my first Breeze experience before we even left the ground.  

Once we were airborne, I logged on to the Wi-Fi and found it fast enough to continue working seamlessly from the sky. The flight attendants lived up to Breeze's “Nice” slogan, offering me plenty of delicious snacks (pro tip: get the popcorn!) and refreshing drinks for the haul across the country. I found everyone to be truly friendly onboard. Even the passengers seemed to be in a good mood.

Before I knew it, we touched down at SNA. After I grabbed my rental car, I set off to explore one of my favorite places on earth. Below are five of my recommendations for must-see stops on your trip to Orange County. 

An outdoor paradise: Nestled along Highway 1, Laguna Beach offers visitors a warm and inviting introduction to Orange County. From wandering the boardwalk to enjoying a pickup volleyball game to surfing the waves (or watching those who do), there's plenty to see and do in this delightful town. 

After hopping off the flight from TPA, I was ready to grab something to eat. If stunning ocean views and delicious food sound like your thing, stop by Las Brisas. This delightful restaurant is ideally located near all the shops and attractions. For the best views, ask to be seated in the rose garden, located at the back of the restaurant along the sidewalk that hugs the coastline.  

Once you've fueled up, go for a walk and explore the numerous shops on Forest Avenue. Or, if you're looking to procure some conversation pieces for your home or office, art enthusiasts will easily find options by strolling through the many galleries on North Coast Highway. 

If you're like me, you may need a coffee (or three) to keep going after all of this adventure. My favorite spot to stop in Laguna is Moongoat Coffee. The churro latte? Count me in!

To wrap up your day in Laguna, head to Heisler Park. I've visited this park on many occasions over the years, and it is easily one of my favorite places to watch the sunset. You might even spy on one of the artists camped out nearby, painting your surroundings in real time. On this visit, I was lucky enough to be treated to a live music performance. Tourists and locals gathered to take in the sounds and beauty as the day passed. 

A world of its own: After seeing a photo on Instagram of Catalina Island, I decided I had to visit. Located about 30 miles off the coast of mainland California, this magical island feels like an entirely different universe. I hopped aboard the Catalina Flyer for the 90-minute journey from Newport Beach to Avalon, one of the two towns on Catalina the Flyer services. The large boat featured both indoor and outdoor seating, so I picked an open-air spot at the very top and front of the boat. Little did I know that this average journey would turn into something spectacular. 

After leaving the harbor, our captain announced that a whale had been sighted ahead, so he slowed the pace of our boat and eventually came to a halt. I looked just to my left and a blue whale – the largest animal on the planet – was close by, breaching the cold Pacific Ocean and diving back under. I was absolutely amazed and shocked, snapping more photos and videos than anyone ever should. Passengers rushed to my side of the boat and, thankfully, we didn't tip over. As the whale slowly meandered away, we resumed our journey to Catalina and were accompanied by dolphins jumping in our wake. 

Upon arriving at Catalina Island, I felt like I'd entered another world. In the town of Avalon, golf carts rule the day instead of typical vehicles. Public beaches, live music and an array of shops and dining spots will make you feel as if you've been transported to the Amalfi Coast (or at least Disneyland). I was in the mood for something to eat, so I stopped by Coney Island West for shrimp and fries before indulging in a ginormous latte-flavored ice cream cone from Sailor's Delight Ice Cream Shop. The island, developed by William Wrigley of Wrigley chewing gum fame and once the home of the Chicago Cubs' spring training games, has a rich and fascinating history that's worth exploring. Whether you have just a day or can squeeze in a weekend here, I'd highly recommend adding Catalina Island to your itinerary. 

Dinner on the water: Looking for an upscale dining experience with easy beach access nearby? Don't miss out on Lido Marina Village in Newport Beach. Home to high-end dining and shopping spots, the Village has plenty of places to fill up that extra checked bag you brought along on the trip. I grabbed a coffee from Herst and wandered around before making my way to the nearby Newport Beach Pier. If you'd like to watch surfers catch the morning waves or soak up some afternoon sun, look no further. 

As evening fell, I'd recommend dressing up a bit for dinner at Malibu Farm. This farm-to-table restaurant is one of four in Southern California. Having been to the Malibu Farm location up the road in Malibu for brunch years ago, I was excited to try the dinner fare for the first time. I made a reservation ahead of time and would highly suggest any potential visitors do the same. On the evening of my visit, it was a bit chilly outside, so the staff placed comfortable blankets at each seat and had warm gas fires nearby. I was seated right on the water and as the music drifted through the air, I decided to order something very healthy - Newport Nachos - for my appetizer! And, to follow-up on that healthy decision, I chose the creamy, dreamy lobster mac and cheese for my main course. I'm happy to report that whenever I'm given the chance to return to Malibu Farm again, you'll probably catch me ordering the same items from the menu.

Hike and bike: I knew I needed to get some fresh air and exercise to work off all that food from Malibu Farm. If a hike along the Pacific sounds like your cup of tea, I recommend spending time at the Headlands Trail in Dana Point. I parked at Strand Vista Park and walked up the street to the trail entrance. This trail is unpaved, so bring your best hiking boots or sturdy shoes. I was greeted by a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle, with birds chirping and waves crashing against the shore. If you're feeling adventurous, continue the hike down to the caves for a breathtaking experience. This is best done during low tide. Despite the wobbly walk over the big rocks and unsteady terrain, this hike quickly became one of the highlights of my trip. Plus, with Bear Coast Coffee close by, I stopped once (okay, maybe twice) to pre-fuel and re-fuel for this adventure. 

If hiking isn't your thing, I'd recommend grabbing fresh air by biking in Huntington Beach. After arriving there, I snagged a bike from Ding Drx for just $10 and cruised along the Pacific Coast Highway. At Huntington, there's a dedicated path along the beach for those who want to walk and bike. Before I knew it, I had cruised six miles. I made a stop at the pier which just so happened to be hosting a retro Volkswagen Bus showcase. Dozens of tricked out buses lined the pier and as I wandered by, I snapped tons of photos and dreamed of owning one myself  … in another lifetime, of course.

After all that hiking and biking, I'd recommend a stop at Duke's right on the beach. After visiting their location in Honolulu, Hawaii, last December, I perked up when I learned about their location in Huntington Beach. This chain is located only in Hawaii and California, so swing by for a drink or a bite and enjoy the good vibes Duke's is known for. 

Theme parks (and theme park recovery) - Anaheim and Orange: Theme-park lovers rejoice! Disneyland, Universal, SeaWorld, Knott's Berry Farm and many other major theme parks are located in Orange County. One can easily spend a weekend (or a few weeks) at these. One of my new favorite spots near these major attractions is the Anaheim Packing House, a large food hall with options galore. Inside, you'll find two floors packed with restaurants offering everything from delicious dim sum to savory pizza. After wandering around and mulling my options, I finally chose Black Sheep Grilled Cheese Bar where I indulged in a sourdough sandwich filled with fontina cheese and bacon. With delicious tomato soup and the perfect pickle slice, I'm still thankful I made that choice.

After all the busyness of the theme parks, a visit to the City of Orange is a great way to wind down and relax. I wandered down Glassell Street, stopping at numerous antique stores. The vibrant center circle of this charming city buzzes with activity and is filled with restaurants. While there, I stumbled upon an impromptu opera performance - you just never know what you'll find in California! 

Making my way back to Tampa Bay: After a busy and beautiful visit to Orange County, it was time to head back home. After returning my rental car at SNA, I made it through security in no time (hello, TSA PreCheck!) and boarded Breeze's nonstop flight to TPA. I was again seated in Breeze's Ascent cabin in seat 1A, which had plenty of legroom. After jetting out of SNA and making the turn over the Pacific, we began the eastward journey. I'm a bit of an aviation nerd, so I kept checking the in-flight tracker, watching as our dot moved further and further. In less than five hours, we touched down in Tampa Bay.

Say hello to sunny Southern California! Alaska Airlines recently launched daily nonstop flights between Tampa Bay and San Diego, adding to their growing roster of options available at TPA.

We recently sent our Communications Specialist, C.J. Johnson, on a trip to explore the second-largest city in California. C.J. manages TPA’s social media accounts and is an avid traveler, so he was happy to share his experiences in San Diego. 

From check-in to take-off, an easy experience

I couldn't contain my excitement when I got the chance to explore San Diego via Alaska Airlines' new nonstop service between TPA and SAN. California is one of my all-time favorite destinations and I eagerly embraced the opportunity to trade the Gulf Coast for the sunny shores of the West Coast.

With the addition this year of a nonstop route to SAN, Alaska Airlines expanded their West Coast offerings to five destinations from TPA. Alaska Airlines is part of the Oneworld Alliance, and the partnership makes flying with Alaska Airlines even more appealing because of the reciprocal travel benefits for people like me who have status on a partner airline.

The check-in process with Alaska was super easy – within 20 minutes, I had obtained my boarding pass, breezed through security and was settling into my spot at the American Airlines Admirals Club in TPA's Airside F. 

The convenience of having a nonstop flight to the West Coast added to the thrill of the trip. No layovers, just a straight shot from Tampa Bay to the Pacific Coast – 2,000 miles away!– in about five hours. The flight left in the early evening and arrived in San Diego around 8 p.m. 

A special livery

One distinctive note about my particular flight is that it was aboard one of Alaska's special aircraft, adorned with the X̱áat Ḵwáani Salmon Livery (a livery is the color scheme and design on the exterior of an aircraft). Alaska Airlines said this unique livery in the Alaskan Tlingit language represents the spiritual connection between people and the vital role salmon play in our environment. 

The onboard experience

Being a bit tall, I snagged an emergency exit row seat that provided ample legroom, making the cross-country journey exceptionally comfortable. 

The crew's phenomenal service during the flight left a lasting impression. Their attentiveness kept the trip comfortable as they offered a delightful array of refreshments and snacks. 

I also purchased the WiFi package, which was only $8 for the duration of the flight. The internet connection was more than fast enough for me to keep up with social media and email. 

After touching down in San Diego, I picked up a super cool Jeep Wrangler as my rental car and took the short drive over to my hotel in the city's historic Gaslamp Quarter to prepare for a jam-packed day of exploration.

A morning adventure in Balboa Park

With my body still on East Coast time, I woke up quite early the next morning to see the city bathed in the early morning sun. After a quick breakfast, my first stop was Communal Coffee, a charming spot housed in a renovated Airstream trailer – a dream for a coffee enthusiast like me that provided just the right amount of caffeine I needed to get my day going.

A short drive later, I parked and began to explore Balboa Park. This massive complex features stunning architecture and a botanical garden that easily warrants a full day of exploration. And while I was limited on time, I was able to marvel at the sights and snag lots of photos.

From there, I walked over to the world-renowned San Diego Zoo, hopping on a double-decker bus for a 35-minute ride through the whole facility. It was a delight to visit, with exhibits featuring everything from lions to giraffes to elephants and more. The Zoo spans 100 acres and houses more than 3,500 animals, so there's no shortage of amazing things to see. 

Over the river and across the bridge

Wrapping up the zoo adventure, I hopped back in my Jeep and drove across the Coronado Bridge to the legendary Hotel del Coronado on the peninsula in San Diego Bay. This historic and iconic beachfront resort is known for its stunning Victorian architecture and grand seaside setting. Established in 1888, "The Del" has welcomed dignitaries, celebrities and guests from around the world, offering a timeless blend of luxury, charm and breathtaking ocean views.

After renting a bicycle from Little Sam's Island & Beach Fun nearby, I pedaled along the Pacific, savoring the fantastic views and the fresh ocean breeze.

Before returning to downtown, I made a pit stop at Better Buzz for another dose of caffeine. Their Snickerdoodle Latte, a new-to-me combination of vanilla espresso and spiced brown sugar, was to die for, although I didn't take time to sample any of the cafe's food offerings. 

Postcards and sea lions 

After crossing back over the Coronado Bridge, I visited the famous San Diego mural at 4223 30th Street. For an Instagram junkie like me, this gem provided the perfect photo opportunity. 

Heading north on “The 5,” as Californians refer to their interstate highways, I soon reached La Jolla Cove, known for its cliffs and the very vocal (and smelly) Pacific harbor seals and California sea lions. Despite the slightly unpleasant odor, the spectacle of scores of marine mammals along the shores was a reminder of nature's wonders. Tourists gawked and snapped photo after photo as these creatures barked and basked in the late afternoon sun. 

A magical way to end the day

To cap off my busy day, I rolled down the windows of my Jeep for a drive to Sunset Cliffs Park to catch the sunset. These cliffs provide spectacular views out over the Pacific, periodically punctuated by high-flying sea spray. A word of caution: be mindful of the edge of the cliffs, as there is no guardrail or safety net. As I sat a safe distance from the edge and watched the sun make its way to the horizon, I was joined by dozens of people who also wanted to take in the sight. It had been quite a while since I'd taken the time to watch the sun slip out of view, and this moment turned out to be one of my favorites of the entire trip. 

Before calling it a night, I couldn't resist a visit to In-N-Out Burger, a West Coast favorite of mine, for a double double with fries. When I arrived back at my hotel, I went for a wandering walk around the Gaslamp Quarter. This vibrant part of town is filled with live music and late-night fun – think Ybor City, but with a California vibe.

Back to Tampa Bay

When it came time to catch my return flight to TPA, Alaska Airlines once again delivered a seamless and hassle-free experience. I had ordered a meal ahead of time and, shortly after takeoff, my selection of a cheese and fruit platter was delivered. We touched down in Tampa Bay just a few hours later. 

The trip was remarkable, and I would return tomorrow if I could. I can’t wait to enjoy San Diego’s vibrant charm again. With Alaska’s new nonstop service linking the city to Tampa Bay, it won’t take me very long before I’m ready to go back.

To tell the truth, I’d never heard much about Wilmington, NC.

I’ve lived in Savannah and visited Charleston, SC, and have been to other Southern coastal towns like Beaufort and St. Simons many times. But somehow you just don’t often hear about Wilmington, which is a shame, really.

So when Avelo Airlines had an eye-popping sale on fares from TPA to Wilmington, I bought two tickets for a long anniversary weekend with my wife, Stephanie.

“Where are we going?” she asked.

“Wilmington,” I said. “It’s on the coast of North Carolina, below the Outer Banks.”

“What is there to do Wilmington?” she asked.

Quite a lot, it turns out.

Our pleasant flight into Wilmington’s airport only took about an hour and a half – closer than Orlando! – and the drive to the city’s downtown Historic District, where we would be staying, took less than 10 minutes.

It’s not a big place, with a population of about 120,000 living inside the city limits, but history looms large. It’s been an important port city since its incorporation in 1739, and historic placards and signs on seemingly every house and street corner paint a vivid picture of its citizens and its past.

You can tour architecture from periods ranging from colonial times to the Victorian era and the antebellum south with tours at the Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens, the Bellamy Mansion and the Latimer House. You can also get up close and personal with a World War II-era warship at Battleship North Carolina, a Pacific theater veteran docked conspicuously across the river from downtown.

Some of the history is a little more modern; TV and movie production is a big presence in Wilmington. EUE/Screen Gems Studios, near the airport, is supposed to be the largest filming facility outside of California, although it’s unfortunately not giving tours currently. One Tree Hill, Dawson’s Creek, A Walk to Remember, David Lynch’s 1986 thriller Blue Velvet – all were shot in and around the city. (Paradoxically, the 1991 Martin Scorsese film Cape Fear, named for the river that flows by Wilmington and into its homonymous cape, was filmed almost entirely in South Florida.)

The city’s rich lore even followed us to our hotel, a collection of recycled buildings that have been transformed into ARRIVE Wilmington, a swank boutique hotel complete with a gazebo bar. While part of the small-but-expanding campus (they’re building an addition next door) was a former convent, the most unusual part was the corner lot now housing the Dram Yard restaurant.

The brunch and bar menu may be the focus now, but the lounge once was the Eureka Dye Works, a dry cleaning company damaged (along with dozens of other city sites) by a rampaging circus elephant named Topsy in 1922. Apparently, the carnage included Topsy slurping up a load of fabric dye and spraying it everywhere. The Dram Yard has marked the occasion with an elephant logo and elephant door handles, among other touches.

We went in search of other Topsy tributes during our stay by visiting scads of shops and stores, many of which were packed into the convenient Old Wilmington City Market and the Cotton Exchange. Both shopping centers were filled with locally made wares and sustainably sourced foods. We even ran across some excellent jewelry and clothing made in East Africa at Swahili Coast. There are also some great stops for bookworms, with stacks of used options at Old Books on Front Street and new tomes at Papercut.

While we didn’t make the short drive to the Atlantic coast – nearby Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach are big draws for sunseekers – we did explore some of the pirate yarns at Edward Teach Brewery, a sudsmaker named after the infamous Blackbeard, serving its beer in a former firehouse. It was among a throng of local breweries, like stalwart Front Street Brewery, which offered some delicious bites to eat; the more experimental New Anthem Beer Project; and Flytrap Brewing, named after that botanical oddball, the Venus flytrap, which is found within a short range of Wilmington and nowhere else.

We’re big music fans and theater nerds, and there are plenty of live music options across town. But instead of checking into the historic Thalian Hall or the Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College, we followed our ears to the cavernous Ironclad Brewery, which combined our love for brews and tunes with a three-hour show featuring the local School of Rock chapter. We were only going to stay for a few minutes (for the kids!), but the talented teens wrapped us up for hours as they burned through hit after hit from the ‘60s through the ‘90s. Check that: one of the best performers was only 11, and she absolutely crushed the vocals on Janis Joplin’s Piece of My Heart.

After ending one evening with an appropriately indulgent fondue dinner at The Little Dipper, we started our last day with a late breakfast at the very creative, coastal-modern-themed Seabird, then set out for more sightseeing. Locals tout the scene at the Cargo District, a trendy eating, shopping and housing destination comprised of repurposed shipping containers not far from the historic district. But we much preferred the vibe about a mile away at The Sorrow Drowner, a rambling tiki bar built inside a former community theater. Filled with movie props and oddball objects, the space pretends to be a 1930s adventurers’ club hangout, complete with staff who often work in character and sling showy cocktails – including their namesake drink for two, served in a custom triple-skull bowl.

We weren’t there on a night with live music or a burlesque show, so we departed to make it back in time for a dinner reservation at Tarantelli’s. The main event at this Italian eatery was Spaghetti al Formaggio Parmigiana, a double portion of bucatini in red sauce stirred tableside in a 150-pound wheel of incredibly salty Parmigiano Reggiano that has been melted with a flaming ladle of whiskey. It’s as showy and as filling as it sounds (although you will definitely want to skip the extra pinch of sea salt).

After taking a couple of laps around the block to settle such a big meal, we hoofed it back to our hotel to casually greet wedding guests who popped in and out from the venue next door, a former Catholic church called St. Thomas Preservation Hall. Another couple had just married, and the entire party was spilling out onto the streets.

My wife and I sat in the rocking chairs outside our room and toasted our own wedding six years prior. Then we went inside to get some sleep. We had a plane to catch in the morning.

1. Immerse yourself in a beach day: One must-see destination is Crash Boat Beach, known for its crystal-clear waters and stunning sunsets. There are also several restaurants nearby where travelers can sample local cuisine and enjoy a refreshing drink while admiring the stunning tropical coastline.

2. See the light: For students of history, the Punta Borinquen Lighthouse is a major attraction. Built in 1917, the lighthouse offers spectacular views of the coastline and is a great spot for grabbing those vacation selfies. Visitors can also explore the nearby ruins of the old military barracks to marvel at the remaining structures. 

3. Explore science and history: Arecibo is a short drive from Aguadilla and features a rich history with a variety of interesting attractions. Be sure to stop by the Cueva del Indio, a natural cave formation that features rock formations and beautiful ocean views. Or take a stroll through Arecibo's Plaza de Recreo, a town square with a historic fountain and various shops. The nearby Arecibo Observatory once boasted a world-renowned radio telescope that was the largest in the world for many years. The telescope, featured in the movies Contact and Goldeneye, collapsed in 2020 and won't be rebuilt, but the facility still conducts astronomical research. A visitor center and observation deck are still open, but be sure to call ahead.

4. Lose yourself in the forest: For a little extra dash of adventure, the Gozalandia Waterfall is a destination you won't want to miss. Located in the nearby town of San Sebastian, the waterfall offers a chance for a dip in its natural pools and the opportunity to explore the surrounding natural beauty. Visitors can also enjoy a quiet reprieve in the nearby park or sample local delicacies from the food vendors.

We recently sent our Communications Specialist, C.J. Johnson, on a trip to explore the Cayman Islands, sampling the local cuisine and taking in the sights. C.J. manages the TPA social media accounts and is an avid traveler, recently setting (and meeting) a goal of visiting 30 countries and all 50 states before turning 30 last fall. Having never visited the Cayman Islands, he shared the below travelogue highlighting his experience. 

A breezy boarding process and fun flight

I may be a bit biased, but flying out of TPA is a form of self-care. It’s truly unlike any airport in the world – quick, easy and efficient. And, where else can you grab a selfie with a giant pink flamingo before your flight? 

For this trip, Cayman Airways bumped me into business class, so I was able to check in using their fast pass lane on the ticketing level and was then granted access to the American Airlines Admirals Club at TPA. It took me only minutes to check a bag, grab my boarding pass, make it through security, and settle in at the lounge before my flight. 

From my perch in the lounge, I spied our plane arriving. One of my favorite things about Cayman Airways is their colorful livery, and the coat of arms that adorns the wings makes their aircraft easily recognizable. Last year alone, I flew almost 60,000 miles, so I was excited to rack up a few more aboard a (new to me) carrier. After I boarded, I was immediately impressed with the colorful uniforms worn by the flight attendants and how warmly they greeted passengers. Before long, I noticed the sounds of island music filling the cabin. We took off from Tampa and were shortly treated to an island-flavored beverage. Few, if any, passengers were mad about that!

I always try to snag a window seat, especially when I'm flying somewhere I haven't yet been. After a quick hop south, I spied the Cayman Islands out my window. Upon touching down, the door opened and instead of using a traditional jet bridge, we walked down on a ramp. I immediately felt that I was in a special place and was greeted by an airport official who guided me through their Meet and Greet Fast Track service, clearing customs in no time. Minutes later, I had my checked bag in hand and was on my way to explore Grand Cayman. 

 Sunsets, stingrays and sparkling caves

As soon as I exited the airport, I was greeted by cars driving on the opposite side of the road and chickens roaming all over town. So, if you plan on visiting, keep an eye both on the traffic AND the wildlife. 

One of the first activities I tried was a breakfast swim with the stingrays. I know that sounds crazy and if I’m being honest, I was quite nervous about it. After waking up early, I made my way to Stingray City aboard a charter boat from Red Sail Sports. The morning sun rose as we glided out to the shallows. The water was absolutely stunning – it looked as if an Instagram filter had been applied to it. After arriving at Stingray City and listening to a safety briefing by the captain, we hopped in the shallow water and watched as stingrays of all sizes began to swim by. Before long, I worked up the courage to not only touch one, but to gently hold a large stingray. My courage ran out after approximately 4 seconds, so I gingerly released that huge creature back into the cool waters of the Caribbean Sea. After we wrapped up our swim with the stingrays, the captain took us over to a nearby coral reef for snorkeling. I jumped off the side of the boat into an entirely different world. I've snorkeled before, but this experience made me feel like I was swimming in an aquarium. Fish of all colors and sizes streamed by and here, under the water,  I began to truly relax and settle into the pace of the island.

Another of my favorite adventures on the island included a trip to the Cayman Crystal Caves. Nestled in a large forest, these caves are truly a unique experience. After loading up in a van, we bounced down a dirt road as we made our way to see these underground beauties. Before long, we were taking steps down deep into the earth. I marveled at the large formations dangling from the ceiling and saw sparkling passageways become illuminated by the lights of a dozen iPhones, bringing together the modern and the ancient. Kids and adults alike gaped in wonder at these caves that have been forming for over a millennia. As our tour guide took us through cave after cave, they asked the group to stand still. Then, the solar-powered lights were flipped off and we were surrounded by total darkness. It was unlike anything I’ve experienced. As we emerged from the caves, we squinted at the bright sun and kept an eye on the numerous bats who also shared the caves with us.

On my final night in Grand Cayman, I went out for a sunset cruise. Again, the team at Red Sail Sports pulled through with a dreamy experience. We pushed back from land and soon those onboard were feasting on complimentary snacks as we made our way out into deeper water. Speaking of water, the blue hue of the Caribbean Sea is simply stunning. Before long, the sun began its gradual dip into the horizon. Families and couples and solo travelers alike grabbed dozens of selfies, capturing this amazing experience to share with their friends back home. As we made our way back, the moon came out and the stars shone overhead. It was sheer magic.

Delicious meals served with divine views

You may be wondering where one should refuel after all of this exploring. You’re in luck: in the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean, options abound! One of my new favorite spots to grab a bite is at Tillies, located within the Palm Heights resort on Seven Mile Beach. This stretch of the island is adorned with high-end resorts and cute boutique hotels. Each seat at this restaurant is surrounded by open canopies and palm trees with several of the seats being directly in the sand. The hospitality of the team at Tillies is unmatched and in many ways, I felt like I was living a real-life version of “White Lotus.”

One of my other favorite spots for a bite is Ms. Piper’s Kitchen + Garden, a chic restaurant right next to the beach. This quaint spot features intimate dining with some of the best food I’ve ever had. For dinner, I feasted on a delicious appetizer, enjoyed a sizzling skillet of steak and chicken, and finished off my meal with a lime sorbet that was truly divine.  

Located in the Caribbean Club, Luca is a restaurant that is sure to please the entire family. I visited this spot for dinner and was impressed with the outdoor seating that provided beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea. Pro tip: Go in the evening and watch as the golden hour light floods Seven Mile Beach and bask in the final rays of the day. 

In addition, I also visited Abacus at Camana Bay. This lovely restaurant, located within a convenient shopping center, features all kinds of dishes and drinks. On the evening I visited, I chose to indulge in the endless lobster dish. What better way to get a taste of the island than sitting under the palm trees with lobster rolling out, plate after plate?

My final takeaways

This experience was made so much easier by the team at Cayman Airways. From the moment I checked in at TPA, they made the journey down to the Cayman Islands a breeze. Instead of the hassle of a connecting flight, I was able to take off from America’s Favorite Airport and land 90 minutes later in an entirely different world. The onboard experience set the tone for the entire trip with warm island hospitality and music. Cayman Airways offers nonstop flights five days a week (Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday) from TPA to GCM, so it's never been easier to get away for a few days and enjoy some time on the island. One of my new favorite spots on the planet is now just a short flight away, so I can't wait to visit again.

1) Lighthouses galore: The Portland Head Light is the perfect place to kick off your trip to Maine. Located just a few minutes from Portland International Jetport (PWM), this iconic lighthouse is a dream for historians and photographers alike. This lighthouse, Maine’s oldest, was completed in the 1700s. Admission costs $2 for adults and $1 for children.

2) A district with charm: If you're looking for a good strolling spot to shop, dine and hunt for souvenirs, look no further than Old Port! This charming section of town is the perfect place to get acquainted with Portland. Watch the boats leave for the day from the harbor nearby or catch a live performance by a local musician. 

3) Views upon views: Pack up a picnic and drink in Portland's stunning landscape at the Eastern Promenade, the perfect place to relax along your travels. A short walk from Old Port, the Eastern Promenade has a great beach, a trail to catch some fresh air and a beautiful community garden. This two-mile stretch is a favorite among visitors wanting to soak in the scenery and take some selfies.

4) Wander around: Nestled in the Arts District of Portland, the Museum of Art has stood the test of time. Since its founding in 1882, it has grown into a beloved attraction that brings in more than 150,000 visitors each year. From kids and family programs to numerous exhibitions, this stunning museum is not to be missed.

5) A short drive: If a quiet escape is more your speed, don’t miss out on the amazing Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, just outside of Portland. This attraction is about an hour’s drive from the city center and spans approximately 323 acres. For nature lovers and city folks alike, these gardens provide a respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

2) Raleigh, NC: Raleigh continues to grow quickly and is becoming an economic powerhouse. If a downtown with easy access to the mountains is your vibe, this gem is a great option for a weekend getaway. Downtown Raleigh offers loads of shopping and restaurants: Don’t miss out on dinner at Centro or grab a cup of joe at Heirloom Coffee in the Warehouse District. If adventuring and hiking in nature is more your speed, a short drive from Raleigh will take you to Medoc Mountain where views and hiking trails abound.  American, Delta, Southwest and (soon!) Avelo offer nonstop access from Tampa to this booming region. 

3) Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX: DFW needs no introduction to many. This sprawling area is filled with food and touristy treats alike. Wander through the Dallas Museum of Art or drink in the views at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Or, if you’re in the mood to get your “western” on, stop by the Fort Worth Stockyards for a cattle drive and loads of BBQ. American and Spirit offer nonstop flights to DFW, with Frontier resuming their nonstop service soon. Those looking for closer proximity to Dallas itself might consider flying Southwest Airlines, which offers nonstop service to DAL (Love Field).

4) New Orleans, LA: Last, but certainly not least, New Orleans offers those looking for a weekend full of fun and food the perfect place for both. Mardi Gras is held each February in The Big Easy, launching a days-long celebration that involves lots of treats and dancing. Wander the French Quarter or take in the amazing views of Jackson Square, and be sure not to miss out on live jazz music night after night. 1)  Covent Garden: Tucked away in London’s West End, Covent Garden is a photographer's paradise. Local stores abound, this quaint neighborhood is filled with a variety of teas and tasty treats. Holiday decorations adorn the open-air market where visitors can pick up gifts from local vendors. Grab a hot drink from one of street carts nearby and get lost wandering through the beauty of the quaint stores.

2) Shopping at Harrods: If you’re the designated Santa for your family this year, consider making a visit to Harrods. Upon entering this iconic store in London's Knightsbridge neighborhood, you’ll be greeted by seven floors of shopping. Harrods is one of the largest shopping destinations in Europe, housing over 5,000 brands with everything from souvenirs to high-end fashion pieces. Afternoon tea is also served here, so be sure to book a spot to refuel after your shopping extravaganza.

3) Riverside Christmas Market on the Thames: Wandering through an open-air market while feeling the breeze off the River Thames? Count us in! The Riverside Christmas Market, directly across from the Tower Bridge, is one of the most iconic holiday markets in the city. Endless food, drinks and views can be found in this walkable market. Don’t miss out on sampling some delicious hot chocolate and enjoying one of the many sweet or savory treats made by street vendors.  

4) Biking around London: While much of central London is walkable, exploring the city via bicycle is one of the best (and eco-friendly) options for getting around. Fortunately for travelers, bike rental stations are everywhere, with flexible pickup and drop-off locations. As a reminder, vehicles and bikes drive on the left side of the road in the UK, so make sure to be mindful when making turns and approaching intersections.

5) Golden views at The Monument: For those looking for a sweeping view of the city, The Monument to the Great Fire of London provides one of the most unique and amazing vantage points. After climbing up more than 300 narrow steps, the traveler will be rewarded with unparalleled views of London. The platform at the top of the Tower is a perfect place to watch the sunset over the city and catch the famous golden hour glow.

Museo Maya De Cancun protects the most significant archeological collections of the Mayan culture in Mexico and includes access to the San Miguelito Archeological Zone. Pieces from various Mayan sites of Quintana Roo, Palenque and Chichen Itza are housed in the museum as well as conserved fragments of wall paintings with animal and marine design elements.

Off we go

Prior to my trip to Switzerland, the most I knew about the country or the Alps were those Swiss Miss pudding bars from the ‘80s and the yodeling guy on the Price is Right.

Now, after one short visit, I want to move there. It’s a beautiful country with bustling metros, quiet countryside scenes, majestic mountains and alpine lakes, and warm, friendly people.

I’ll begin with Edelweiss Air. First, you couldn’t ask for a nicer and more pleasant flight crew and onboard experience in the A340. That’s a good thing, because the flight is almost nine hours there and almost 12 hours back.

If you can swing the upgrade to the Economy Max seats, it’s definitely worth it, but all of the seating is far roomier than your usual U.S. domestic flight. (Pro Tip 1: Try to be tired on the flight out so you can sleep on the overnight leg. It’s tough because you fly into the sunrise and it comes up around halfway into the flight, or 3 a.m., Tampa time. You want to be able to sleep through that so you can hit the ground running!)

Our trip was in mid-March, or “Shoulder Season,” as it’s known in Switzerland. We were fortunate and had near perfect weather with just one morning of drizzly rain, and four of the seven days were sunny with highs in the upper 50s and lows in the upper 30s (Fahrenheit of course – when you’re there, it will be in Celsius). I wouldn’t hesitate at all to travel in this timeframe since it’s far less busy than other times in the year.

A tale of two cities

We landed in Zurich on Saturday morning and walked into the only airport I’ve been to in a while that rivals TPA on cleanliness and ease. This is a theme we discovered throughout Switzerland. Clearing customs took about an hour for non-EU passport holders, so you may want to get coffee before boarding the train to the customs area. Proof of COVID vaccination was required for the flight and for entry into Switzerland (a recent negative test could be substituted), otherwise there were very few restrictions other than wearing a mask on transit.

An easy walk to the in-airport train station had us on our way to the first destination: Lausanne. The national train system in Switzerland is a marvel and runs with remarkable precision and comfort. Not one train during our trip was late or early, just right on time … every. Single. Time. (Pro Tip 2: When boarding longer trains, make sure you aren’t separated too far from the restaurant car so you can grab an easy snack or beer.)

Lausanne is a breathtaking city right on Lake Geneva (known as Lac Leman locally) with a view of the French Alps across the lake. The town itself is busy, but not overwhelmingly. It’s actually a tale of two cities of sorts. On the shores of the lake, which is where our hotel was, life moves actively but leisurely as expected in a vacation area. However, a quick ride on the metro funicular takes you into the business district and Old Town where it all moves a little faster and you can find more clubs and bars than ever needed – if you’re into such things.

Our trip to Old Town was mostly for one reason: fondue! We went to the oldest fondue spot in the city, Pinte Besson, for our foray into the cheesy goodness. There are many varieties, but we went largely traditional with the bread, potatoes, and other small accoutrements to go along. You'll likely be full for awhile. (Pro Tip 2: Nothing says “tourist” more than eating fondue outside of the fall/winter timeframe since the locals consider it a cold-weather treat. Get it anyway.)

Day-tripping near France

From Lausanne we day-tripped to Vevey and Montreaux, as well as Geneva and Evian, France across the lake. Near Vevey is the Vinorama, which as the name implies is a world of wines. The region is Switzerland’s largest wine producing area and you can sample and dine on as much as you want here.

We headed back to Zurich midweek for the remainder of our trip. One of the best ideas from Dori was to do a walking tour with a guide from the local tourism agency. The tour was free, but tips were expected at the end. (Pro Tip 3: Outside of this, tipping was not expected anywhere else. Service workers are paid on a non-tip basis, so at the most it’s considered pleasant to round up to the next whole dollar/franc.) The walking tour was a great way to get our bearings, learn the history, and identify areas we wanted to spend more time. We also day-tripped to Chur from Zurich. Chur is one of the oldest permanent settlements in Switzerland and was fun to explore for the day.

Good eats

Food in Zurich and other large cities runs the spectrum of all ethnicities and price points. You can find late-night doners, light baked goods, fine dining and everything in between. The coffee culture in Switzerland is a big deal and they drink coffee all day and into the night. Order it Swiss-style which is a long espresso with a delicious sweetened creamer – somewhere between a latte and a flat white. We were there on St. Patrick’s Day, so we made our way to and English Pub near the hotel for some burgers and fries or “chips.” (Pro Tip 4: You’ll get a red and yellow bottle with fries and – fair warning – the yellow is mayonnaise, not mustard! Like Jules says in Pulp Fiction, they drown ‘em in it. It’s worth a try as the mayo there is a little different than here in the U.S.)

Despite being in the EU, Switzerland does not use the Euro and the local currency is still the Swiss franc (CHF). The country can be a little on the pricier side as the franc is strong to the dollar and the economy there is generally a little more expensive. However, there are work arounds particularly for things like breakfast and lunch. Across the country there is a network of stores called CoOp and Migros. You can buy high quality food items there including breads, meats, cheeses, beers and wines and simply dine al fresco at any number of places in the cities – just like the locals do. Another tip: Don’t buy bottled water. All of the cities have ample free water sources and the water is essentially what you’d buy in the bottle anyway.

Heading home

As we prepared to return home, a negative COVID test was required for the flight as well as re-entry to the U.S. Several of our friends gave us a hot tip prior the trip about an online option for the test so we didn’t have to find a clinic and worry about how much it would cost and turnaround time. The tests we got were by Abbott and Dori picked them up on Amazon prior to the trip and brought them along. It’s a basic at-home kit many of us are familiar with now with the exception of the process needing to be monitored and proctored by an online assistant. We simply followed the directions on the package and from the proctor and 15 minutes later we were both clear to come home. The test comes with an app to download so you can show proof at the airport.

The trip home is a little different than the trip there. It’s not only longer thanks to the headwind going west, but it’s in the daylight for all 11 hours. It’s difficult to sleep, but that’s not a bad thing because you’ll be nice and tired when you get home to your own bed and that will help fight off the jetlag. However, again, the onboard Edelweiss experience from the service to the food is exceptional. Whether it’s back to Switzerland or to connect somewhere else, we can’t wait to fly with them again.

Toronto: A traveler’s top 10 checklist

Toronto has been on my travel bucket list for a while. As someone who didn’t travel much before the pandemic, it’s safe to say I haven’t made much progress when it comes to checking off some of those boxes. But with COVID-19 cases dissipating and a nonstop route to Toronto from TPA practically begging me to book, I figured it might be time to start planning. Here are my top ten things I'd like to do in Toronto.

1.  First, of course, Toronto is home to the iconic CN Tower, the tallest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere. A must-see, it's a true sight for any architecture enthusiast, as well as being an unmistakable identifier of this great Canadian city. 

2.  Keeping along the architectural vein, the Royal Ontario Museum is also on my list. Located in downtown Ontario this stunning external structure and an even more impressive interior is home to more than 6 million objects and specimens. The museum is one of North America’s most renowned cultural institutions.

3.   Grey Gardens, acclaimed by foodies from all over the world, has a light and inviting feel. Guests can choose to dine in the intimate dining room and watch the open kitchen or enjoy small plates at the walk-in wine bar.

4.  While I love architecture and culture, there’s something about taking a trip that makes you want to branch out and unwind, to get out of the city for a bit. What better way to do that than with a Full-Day Niagara Winery Tour from Toronto? This is an all-inclusive wine tasting tour that covers everything you can think of, so you don’t have to worry about driving or where to go next. 6.  Included in a top 10 checklist must be Hanmoto. Hanmoto is a prime example of Toronto’s thriving snack bar culture, serving small plates and cocktails. With its casual feel, Hanmoto is the home of Dyno Wings, which are a local legend.

7. Next up is the famous Kensington Market, known for its numerous vintage shops, great food and fruit stands and diverse culture. The best way to reach the market if you’re staying downtown is by foot due to the limited parking.  Because of the artsy nature of the market you’re bound to run into a performance happening in the streets. From sketch artists to characters like Peter Parkour, a vlogging and skateboarding spiderman, the art scene is distinct and flourishing. The same goes for the murals, public sculptures and art fairs chock full of artisanal treasures found throughout the Kensington Market.

8.  While the Victorian era has long passed, there are still relics of it today in Toronto, one being the Allan Gardens Conservatory. This Victorian-Era greenhouse complex dating back to 1858 is open to the public 365 days a year and houses a multitude of tropical greenery. Spanning over 16,000 square feet, the conservatory feature six greenhouses as well as a park and a playground.

9.   Bang Bang Ice Cream and Bakery not only has the most Instagram worthy ice-cream sandwiches, but this place can serve up just about anything you can dream. The over-the-top deserts are a sweets lover’s dream come true, making it the perfect place to stop after a day of sightseeing. 

10.   As a major fan of the Tampa Bay Lightning and hockey in general, I’d be remiss if the Hockey Hall of Fame wasn’t included in this checklist. Housing the world’s largest hockey collection dating back to the game’s origin, the Hockey Hall of Fame has it all with interactive exhibits and theaters for you to watch footage from the video vault.

This, of course, is just my top 10 must-dos for Toronto. With many other options to choose from, including Niagara Falls tours, iconic landmarks like graffiti alley and public parks, there seems to be something for everyone. Nearly five hours in the air landed me at McCarran International Airport, located just minutes from the Las Vegas strip. We landed late in the afternoon, and our first stop was the southwest corner of Utah to visit Zion National Park and stargaze from the sunroof of our rental. The quick road trip took us just under two hours – 120 minutes of beautiful scenery surrounded by fire-colored mountains. The vast landscape was unfamiliar to my boyfriend and me – both Florida residents. Even on our drive back to Vegas the next day, it never got old.

The next morning, we headed back to Nevada to try our luck on the Vegas strip. Check-in at Caesar’s Palace wasn’t until 4 p.m. (we opted not to upgrade to the Caesar’s Suite), so we decided on some sightseeing and snacks instead.

Our first stop took us to a famous hotel with a 44-foot chandelier that spans multiple floors of the building. We visited a food hall-like space with breakfast, lunch, dinner and ice cream options, deciding to test out China Poblano, a fusion concept with both Asian and Mexican fare. We both stuck to the right side of the menu, indulging in ahi tuna ceviche and a sweet and spicy lo mein.

After finally checking-in, it was time for a quick cat nap. Then more food.

Dinner was at Tender Steakhouse located on the ground floor of the Luxor hotel. A 14-oz end cut of prime rib was enough to share accompanied by the creamiest Gouda mac and cheese I’ve tasted. After dinner came a true Vegas night out: gambling and enjoying the atmosphere at the Bellagio and MGM Grand.

The next day was more of a low-key Vegas experience, but maybe even more enjoyable than the first. We had breakfast at the well-known Egg Slut (where the line was about 90-people deep, but worth the wait) and digested our breakfast with a walk down the Strip.

As typical tourists would, we took a selfie with the Welcome to Las Vegas sign and stopped by the pawn shop featured on Pawn Stars in hopes of snagging a photo with Rick Harrison. He wasn’t there, but we did get a good shot with his cardboard cutout.

The final stop on our trip was maybe our favorite: Fremont Street. This street, known as the ‘second most famous street in Las Vegas’ is somewhat of a pedestrian mall covered by a massive LED ceiling and surrounded by older casinos and older restaurants. Street performers danced and painted as onlookers enjoyed their artistry and zip-liners flew by overhead.

A red eye on Frontier Airlines brought us back to Tampa by early Tuesday morning. The roundtrip flight cost just $63 each and was smooth and comfortable.

Try Marquesitas – cone-shaped thin waffles stuffed with chocolate or other savory ingredients – a delicacy that originated in the Yucatan Peninsula.

3. Adventures in nature

Diving, boating, zip lining or jungle-cruising – it’s all there in Cancun, Mexico. The city is sprinkled with natural parks like Xcaret Park, home to the Riviera Maya, with underground rivers, coral reefs and aviaries worth the 2-hour flight. Take your snorkel underwater at Xel Ha Ecological Park, the top snorkeling destination full of sea turtles and other marine life or visit Chankanaab Eco-Archaeological Park where you’ll get to explore some Mayan culture with ruins and beautiful views.

4. Museums and history

Cancun is rich with Mayan history and home to many famous, unique museums. Air Canada last offered limited seasonal flights from Toronto between October 2020 and January 21, 2021, but service was suspended again due to COVID-19 and travel restrictions and limitations. All other Canadian flights were suspended in April 2020 and have yet to resume.

Canada is the number one international visitor market into Tampa Bay with 436,773 passengers flying between Canada and Tampa in 2019. Due to the pandemic, that number dropped 66 percent in 2020 representing 147,798 passengers.

Canadian visitors spent more than $265 million in Tampa Bay in 2019 alone, according to Visit St. Pete/Clearwater, making this market a huge driver for economic development the Tampa Bay region.

Florida has an estimated 500,000 Canadian snowbirds, according to a 2018 Canada-Florida Economic Impact Study by Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service.

Seattle, Washington is not only opposite Tampa on the map, but its grungy nature and decidedly cloudy weather make it an unusual experience for east-coast natives. That said, Seattle in the summer is a vacation destination worth experiencing – especially when you can get there nonstop from Tampa International Airport.

Here is my experience:

Aboard an Alaska Airlines flight, 6-hours took me 3,000 miles across the country to a city surrounded by water and mountains. As the flight began its descent, mighty Mount Rainier welcomed me, standing tall and ice-capped, skirted in the greenery that is the Emerald City. The flight, one of the most comfortable I’ve experienced, cost a cool $217 roundtrip from TPA and was as painless as any cross-country travel could be. Once my partner and I arrived, we hopped on a quick train from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport directly into the city where we rolled our bags just blocks to our hotel. Surprisingly, it was still light outside after 9 p.m., something Seattleites are accustomed to as the sun doesn’t set until late at night during the summer months. Aside from the west-coast unfamiliarities, my trip was made up of fulfilled hunger, hikes and humpbacks.

The food

This city may be known for its coffee, but the eats in Seattle were savory and satisfying. We started our flavor tour at the famous Pike Place Market with Beecher’s homemade mac ‘n cheese - a spot whose delectable scents pull you in long before you can see it. As we pulled up, we watched cheesemongers push and pull their weight in cheese curds in a giant metal tub. The mac ‘n cheese was creamy, dreamy and delicious and the grilled cheese: smoky sourdough heaven.

The next noteworthy niche was Metropolitan Grill – voted the best steakhouse in Seattle – where photos of celebrities and porterhouse cuts grace the walls. The lobster bisque reached an area of my taste buds I didn’t know existed and the Wagyu filet both sliced and tasted like butter. Not feeling fancy? Don’t worry. Even at the city’s “best steakhouse,” sweats and jeans seem to be the typical attire.

The next night, we feasted on Italian fare at Il Terrazzo Carmine. The restaurant is dressed in classic Italian décor and is hidden in the back end of a tall building in Pioneer Square. There, I had quite possibly the best salad I’ve tasted – grilled romaine with tangy gorgonzola, apples and walnuts. The restaurant offers small or large portions of their pasta, so I tried both a seafood ravioli and a salmon penne with asparagus and vodka cream sauce, both were out of this world. After dinner, we stopped at Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream where they’ll stack a cone high as your head or hand-spin a milkshake with your choice of flavors.

Finally, local recommendations led us to Dick’s Drive-in – a burger spot where what you see is what you get, meaning no substitutions to any of their menu items. You won’t want to change anything on these burgers anyhow, as the flavor on these bad boys makes them worth much more than the price at just $4.25 for a ‘Dick’s Deluxe’. Yes, we went back before the flight home.

The Fins

Other than the cuisine, this next activity was probably the top attraction on our trip: whale watching. Sandwiched between the Puget Sound and Lake Washington, Seattle’s nearby waters are a popular spot to see different kinds of whales, especially during the summertime. As a true Florida native, the only whale I’d ever seen in person was doing tricks with a trainer somewhere in Orlando, so my enthusiasm for this tour was rich. And I was not disappointed. The tour took us to see a massive humpback as it breached the cobalt waters and we followed a pod of orcas as they searched for their next meal. We booked the half-day whale watching tour on the Puget Sound Express and departed out of Edmonds. Snacks, refreshments and coffee were available during the trip as well as their signature freshly-made blueberry buckle (try it).

The footpaths

Seattle lacks little when it comes to public transportation, but when it’s not raining, traveling by foot is the way to go. The city has 59-square-miles of land, but you can get from the waterfront to a good amount of the downtown area in within 30-minutes or less by walking. Stroll alongside the beautiful waterfront to the city’s landmark: the Space Needle or head to Kerry Park – a spot well-known to boast the best views of Seattle’s downtown.

We took our hiking boots outside of the city to Twin Falls, a 40-minute drive from Seattle, to enjoy a hike with a gorgeous view. Twin Falls gets its name for the two massive waterfalls that can be seen after hiking nearly 3-miles upstream. The hike was clean and beautiful and the sights were spectacular. Bring a raincoat and some boots and get to climbing – this trail has a moderate difficulty level.

From the food to the fins and the footpaths in between, Seattle is truly an experience that everyone should try at least once. Summer months boast the best weather, but the city still has much to offer during its fall and winter months - just bring a parka and keep an umbrella close by.

Looking to take the kids on a trip filled with maritime history? Norfolk, Virginia makes the perfect spot as it is home to the world's largest naval base. The city is located less than 30 minutes from Virginia Beach and under an hour from Williamsburg. It has been voted one of the Top 10 Booming Destinations in recent years. If you’re headed for a visit, be sure to check out the Virginia Zoo, Battleship Wisconsin and the Nauticus Maritime Center.

San Diego Zoo

St. Louis Zoo

It’s no surprise tacos make the list of the foods to try while you’re in Austin as locals call it the city’s favorite food. Located just a 5-hour drive from the Mexican border, the Tex-Mex is real in Austin. Breakfast tacos land on the menu at just about every brunch spot in the city and tortillas filled with brisket and bbq aren’t sparse either. Crispy? Corn? Flour? Savannah, Georgia is known for its Southern charm, hospitality and comfort food - and for the first time in TPA's history, Tampa travelers can visit this city nonstop on Silver Airways, starting April 2.

So what's the draw to a city just hours southeast of Georgia's bustling capital of Atlanta? Well, although Savannah may be small, stretching just over 100 square miles of land, the city is stocked with enticing activities and plenty to feast on.

Southern charm

Georgia's oldest city is full of hey y'all's and bless your heart's, but the charm doesn't stop at the lingo. Walk from square to square (to square - there are 22 of them!) to enjoy different sights like the beautifully-aged architecture in the Historic District or shrink below the massive Spanish moss-covered trees in Forsyth Park where you'll probably take your next profile picture in front of the famous fountain. The city was founded way back in 1733 and amazingly enough, some of the original buildings are still standing to this day. The popular River Street boasts views of the picturesque Savannah River and you're likely to find some local artists showcasing their work alongside curbs. With year-round-almost-perfect weather, outdoor dining is huge in this city with food trucks scattered throughout and most restaurants having outdoor seating options. Notorious favorites include Vic's on the River, Cotton and Rye or the Olde Pink House, for you higher-end folks, while locals know their barbeque, finding themselves frequenting Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room or Wiley’s Championship BBQ... cause it's in the name. Looking for the best peach cobbler? Some say you'll find it at Sisters of the New South which features 'Real Southern Cooking."

Things to do - and lots of 'em

Once you're done eating and enjoying the sights, stop at the Prohibition Museum, where you might feel like a rule breaker while sipping a cocktail, or waltz into the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum for an interactive experience. Savannah is full of historic museums and unique things to do, including ghost tours and visits to 'haunted' cemeteries. Not so interested in all things spooky? Take a stroll down Broughton Street where you'll see plenty of shops, boutiques and vintage finds to scratch your shopping itch. The closest beach, Tybee Island, is less than a 30-minute drive from downtown and makes for the perfect getaway. While beachside, you'll still have the chance to get your history-lesson on by checking out the historic forts like Fort Screven or Fort Pulaski. Whichever you choose, Savannah is full of things to do no matter your interests.

Key West

There's a place in South Florida - like really south -  where the sun is (almost) always shining, the outdoor activities are abundant and there's water everywhere you look. This place, Key West, is the southernmost point in the continental U.S. and is now accepting ~responsible~ visitors. Face masks are required at most indoor and outdoor areas where 6-foot distancing isn't possible, and the city plans on implementing a city-wide curfew later this month. Beaches, watersports and most parks are open, but the city recommends checking with the tourism facility or charter operator in advance to learn if all areas or services are open, such as bathrooms and concessions.

Nonstop service to Key West is avaiable now on Silver Airways and is scheduled to launch Dec. 17 on American.

Panama City, Panama

Situated along the Pacific Ocean's side of the Panama Canal, this city offers beautiful waterside parks, outdoor activities and tons of culture. If you make it to this beautiful city (either now - negative COVID-test required, or later) be sure to check out Casco Viejo, Money Island or relax canal-side where the climate is tropical year-round. 

The Government of Panama requires a negative COVID-19 test (PCR or Antigen) within 48 hours prior to travel and individuals entering Panama must complete and sign an electronic sworn affidavit prior to check-in. A daily curfew from 9:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. is in place, but there are no intercity travel restrictions. Boston, Massachusetts - feels like England and Italy

Much like the melting pot that is the United States, Boston consists of cultures, architecture and food largely derived from Mainland Europe. Visit the North End to experience a street-long array of authentic Italian restaurants - with options from dense cavatelli to sweet cappuccino - or check out the English-style architecture and Colonial Revivals.

Leavenworth, Washington - feels like Germany

This small town situated in the middle of Washington state is known for its “Bavarian authenticity and Northwest hospitality," bringing a German culture and feel to the western U.S. In the 1960s, leaders of the town yearned to drive tourists and visitors to the area and did so by altering the appearance of the town to mimic that of Bavaria, Germany. The adjacent alpine hills set the outer landscape of the community, meaning all they'd really need was some festivals, wood- and clay-slated buildings and, yes, lots of bier. 

Getting there from TPA: Fly nonstop into Seattle on Alaska Airlines or Delta Air Lines (resumes Dec. 18) and travel just two hours east to Leavenworth.

Holland, Michigan - feels like Amsterdam

Since Dutch immigrants began settling in this area as far back as 1847, this small town has been filled with Dutch culture, traditions and tons of tulips. The city, located almost alongside Lake Michigan, has made it a point to preserve Dutch culture with food like Dutch apple pie and lots of cheese, Dutch architecture and events like the Dutch Winterfest and the Tulip Time Festival. Stop at the Holland Museum or tour the DeZwaan Windmill while you're there.

New Orleans, Louisiana - feels like France

New Orleans, or "N'awlins" to the locals, swanks an eclectic blend of many cultures, but there's no denying many aspects are of French origin, after all, Louisiana got it's name after the territory being called "La Loiuisiane" in honor of King Louis XIV. From Catholic churches to classic cottages, you can see the character for yourself during the annual Mardi Gras festival (Coronavirus permitting) or stroll down Canal Street for some seafood or croissants.

Solvang, California - Feels like Denmark

Full of contemporary Danish architecture and surrounded by beautiful greenery, lots of horses and scenic countryside, Solvang is known as "a little slice of Denmark in Southern California." Old school windmills will turn in the heart of the town as rolling hills line the outskirts, making you feel like you've landed in a real German town. Wondering what you can do while you're there? Stomp some grapes, wine and dine around the area (heavy on the wine part, as there are tons of wineries nearby) or even take a horse and carriage around the scenic roads that border the town. 

Getting there from TPA: Just a little over two hours north of LAX, you can land close to this Danish-like town by flying Alaska Airlines or Delta nonstop into LAX. 

Now, Tampa International Airport has a nonstop flight right into the heart of the action. 

Silver Airways on Oct. 13 announced new nonstop service to Charleston scheduled to begin on Nov. 23. To celebrate the new nonstop service, Silver is offering fares starting at $49 for travel through Dec.16, 2020 for travelers who book before Oct. 21.

North Carolina

North Carolina is home to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville and Grandfather Mountain which are all driving distance from the Charlotte Douglas Airport. Stop at any of these spots and set up camp, rent a cabin or drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway to witness the red, yellow and orange foliage that can only be seen during the fall months of the year.

Now, more than ever, it tops the charts for Fall and Winter getaway destinations with beautiful weather and the opportunity to escape from reality for however long you need.

Here are five top reasons to visit the Tampa Bay region.

1. 35 miles of white sand beaches

With 2 of Tripadvisor's top U.S. beaches, vacationers don't have to go far to find paradise after landing in Tampa. Clearwater Beach, named the #1 beach in the U.S. in 2016, 2018 and 2019, boasts white sand, clear shallow waters, and is the perfect spot for families to lay down their towels and chairs. The Tampa Bay region is gaining national attention for its up-and-coming food scene, which features everything from high-end seafood and steak houses to beach-side bites. For those of you not quite comfortable with the indoor dining scene, there are plenty of delicious outdoor dining options to choose from throughout the region. A few local favorites include Columbia, the oldest restaurant in Florida, and Bern's Steak House, which is home to one of the largest wine collections in the world. 4. Parks, places to go and things to see

From trails, parks, playgrounds and piers, Tampa Bay has countless ways to enjoy the outdoors. Tampa is home to the Tampa Riverwalk, a beautiful 2.6-mile stretch of river-side walkway on the outskirt of Tampa's Downtown. The walkway connects some of the best restaurants in the area to the Glazer Museum, Straz Center and Curtis Hixon Park. Favored by locals, the Riverwalk won 'Greatest Place in America: People's Choice Award' by the American Planning Association in 2019. 

On the other side of the Bay lies the new St. Pete Pier with more than half a mile breathtaking scenery, unique artwork, restaurants and fishing spots. The Pier is the perfect spot for a walk, jog, bike ride or sightseeing the beautiful skyline and waters of St. Pete.

Service to the cities will begin Nov. 19 and the flights will be daily, subject to adjustments depending on demand. TPA previously had weekly service to Cancun on Delta Air Lines, which has not resumed the route since it was halted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Southwest Airlines previously provided nonstop service to Richmond which has not yet resumed.

The route expansion is part of a broader JetBlue strategy to meet an expected increased demand for leisure travel including in Florida, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The airline added 24 new routes to its schedule, many of which it has never flown.

“This is the latest example of JetBlue’s ability to be nimble and play offense as we quickly adjust to new customer behaviors and booking patterns,” said Scott Laurence, JetBlue’s head of revenue and planning. “This latest series of new routes – even in the current environment – advances our revised network strategy, returns more aircraft to the skies and doubles down on our ability to generate more cash sooner.”

JetBlue is also planning to launch from TPA its highly anticipated New York City-LaGuardia flights on Oct. 1, along with new service to Providence and Washington D.C.-National on the same date.

“JetBlue has been a wonderful partner to TPA throughout these challenging times and these new routes show JetBlue’s confidence in the resiliency of the Tampa Bay market,” said Chris Minner, TPA Executive Vice President of Marketing and Communications. “We know our leisure passengers have a strong desire to return to the skies as soon as they feel safe to do so, and this new service to Cancun and Richmond puts us in a great position to fulfill that demand.”

In response, airlines are steadily beginning to bring back service to some of Tampa's top destinantions.

This month, Southwest Airlines is resuming service to Las Vegas while Silver Airways is restoring flights to Nassau, Bahamas. Both airlines - and the destinations - are taking numerous steps to ensure the health and safety of vacationers.

Here's what you can expect to see if you make the trek:

To enter Nassau, Bahamas, travelers must have a valid health visa and a negative molecular swab COVID-19 test taken within five days of the travel date, and are required to self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. Travelers will be denied a boarding pass if they do not present the necessary items upon check-in. That being said, yes, you may quarantine on a private boat, in a hotel room or AirBnB. As for Las Vegas, the tourism-driven city has launched their "Vegas Smart" campaign in an effort to welcome visitors back in a "smart and healthy" manner. This includes the City's partnership with a number of resorts, casinos and other facilities. Visitors and residents are required to wear face coverings in public, keep a 6-foot social distance from others when possible and the City asks that travelers seek medical attention before traveling if they are feeling unwell.

There are plenty of fun or relaxing ventures to enjoy in both of these destinations.

Las Vegas, Nevada

What happens there, stays there, but you don't have to stay indoors when you visit this West Coast city.
