This winter, Porter Airlines will offer new service from Tampa International Airport to John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM), making Ontario’s vibrant port city a convenient option for Tampa Bay travelers. Operating three times weekly beginning December 18, and increasing to four weekly flights in February, this route will be available through April 10, 2027. While Hamilton may be a bit off the beaten path for tourists, if you're thinking about planning a winter or spring getaway, this beautiful town and the surrounding area offer plenty of fun things to do.

Wander the Royal Botanical Gardens’ winter trails and greenhouses: Even in winter, the Royal Botanical Gardens are alive with color. Warm up inside the beautiful Mediterranean and cactus greenhouses where tropical plants thrive year-round or, in early spring, enjoy the outdoor gardens as they begin to awaken with the first signs of tulips and magnolias. It’s a peaceful, nature-filled retreat – an ideal first stop after your flight from TPA.

Chase flowing (and frozen) waterfalls: Hamilton earns its nickname as the “City of Waterfalls,” boasting more than 100 cascades within its limits. In winter, many freeze into stunning natural sculptures, and by spring, they roar back to life with melting snow. Webster’s Falls and Albion Falls are two of the most photogenic and both are easy to reach via car in any season. Bundle up, bring your camera, and enjoy a uniquely Canadian outdoor experience just a short drive from downtown.

Explore downtown Hamilton and James Street North: When it’s chilly outside, Hamilton’s arts and food scene offers the perfect indoor adventure. Browse cozy cafes, enjoy art galleries, and discover local boutiques along the lively James Street North corridor. In spring, the area buzzes with art crawls, live music, and street festivals that showcase Hamilton’s creative spirit.

Take a day trip to Niagara Falls or Toronto: One of Hamilton’s biggest advantages is its location — roughly an hour's drive to both Toronto and the world-famous Niagara Falls. In winter, Niagara Falls can be mesmerizing, often framed by ice and mist, while spring brings rainbows and renewed energy. Toronto, meanwhile, offers endless museums, shopping, and dining, plus lake views that mirror Hamilton’s own harbor front. With Hamilton as your base, you can easily experience the best of southern Ontario.
