TPA gears up for a busy 2026 summer travel season
Peak passenger days will be spread over several months, so be sure to plan ahead before you make the trip to the Airport.
Tampa International Airport is gearing up for another busy summer travel season as travelers set out for vacations, family visits, and warm-weather getaways. With peak travel days spread throughout the months between Memorial Day and mid-August, passengers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow plenty of time before their flights.
Following a bustling spring break, TPA expects nearly 6.1 million passengers to pass through the airport during the summer travel period from June through August. While there will be fewer daily departures on average, flights are expected to be full, with approximately 65,000 travelers moving through the terminal each day.
May 31, June 1, July 5, and August 2 are projected to be among the busiest travel days of the season. Passengers flying on these dates should anticipate larger crowds and allow extra time for parking, check-in, and security screening.
As always, travelers are advised to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures to help ensure a smooth journey. Allowing extra time makes it easier to park, check in, clear security, and even grab a snack before boarding.
Tips for a Smooth Summer at TPA
CHOOSE EXPRESS:
Skip the crowds with TPA’s Red and Blue Express Curbsides, designed for passengers who don’t need to visit Ticketing or Baggage Claim. Follow the Express signs for quick drop-offs and pick-ups right at the Main Terminal.
SKIP THE DRIVE:
Consider public transit options to avoid parking and traffic hassles. Groome Transportation offers express shuttle service between The Villages and TPA, with stops in Brooksville and Wesley Chapel starting at $25. From Pinellas County or downtown Tampa, PSTA’s 300X Airport Express route provides fast, affordable service to the terminal with free parking at the Ulmerton Park & Ride lot.
PLAN AHEAD FOR PARKING:
Reserve your parking online before you arrive. TPA’s booking system guarantees a space and helps the Airport manage demand, making your travel day smoother and less stressful.
CHECK THE WEATHER:
Florida summers often bring pop-up thunderstorms that can briefly affect flight schedules. Early morning flights generally have better odds of staying on time, so monitor your airline’s updates and local forecasts before heading out.
AVOID CIRCLING:
Drivers picking up passengers should use TPA’s Cell Phone Waiting Lot—complete with restrooms, free Wi-Fi, EV charging, and real-time flight information. Once your traveler is at the curb, you can head there quickly without adding congestion to the roadways.
SKIP THE LINES:
TPA offers self-serve boarding pass kiosks on both the Ticketing and Transfer Levels for easy check-in. Hungry travelers can also order food via Uber Eats from participating Airport restaurants and pick it up when ready—no waiting required.
LEAVE YOUR FURRY FRIENDS AT HOME:
Only service animals and pets traveling by air are permitted inside TPA terminals. Pets must remain in carriers or on short leashes for everyone’s safety. Visit TPA’s website for details on airline pet policies and designated pet relief areas.
ADDITIONAL AMENITIES:
TPA makes travel comfortable for all guests, offering Nursing Rooms, Pet Relief Areas, water bottle filling stations, a USO Center, Travelers’ Aid, and Sunflower Lanyards for those with hidden disabilities. Need assistance? Stop by an Information Desk on Level 3 of the Main Terminal, in the Rental Car Center, or near Baggage Claim.
