TPA hosts Spirit Day to celebrate airline’s remarkable growth

Spirit Airlines on Thursday launched new service to Newark, New York City and Indianapolis from Tampa International Airport, building on a remarkable period of growth that has seen the airline add more passengers in the last year than any other airline at TPA.

The new flights bring Spirit’s total number of routes out of Tampa International Airport to 24 – a 50 percent increase in service since 2017.

Spirit’s tremendous growth at TPA over the past two years, both in nonstop destinations and passengers, reflects the airline’s commitment to success in Tampa Bay," said Airport CEO Joe Lopano. "We look forward to seeing plenty more of those yellow planes in the future.”

To celebrate Spirit’s ongoing success, TPA hosted its first-ever Spirit Day, featuring a trio of events, live entertainment, and a social media sweepstakes giveaway for two roundtrip tickets aboard Spirit.

Spirit’s growth was an important part of Tampa International Airport strong Fiscal Year 2019, which saw a record-breaking 22.2 million passengers. Spirit added 437,000 passengers over the previous year, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the Airport’s passenger growth for FY2019.

We are so happy to a part of the Tampa Bay community and our continued growth at TPA," said Spirit Chief Commercial Officer Matt Klein. "Spirit is about supporting communities and creating travel opportunities for those that might not otherwise have them."

The passenger growth comes as the airline added 2,500 total aircraft operations in FY2019.

On Thursday, Tampa International Airport joined Spirit, passengers and guests for Spirit Day to celebrate the airline’s growth and commitment to TPA.

The day was marked by three gate events commemorating the start of new air service to New York City, Newark and Indianapolis, and featured giveaways, thematic cakes and even a visit from international social media sensations Amira and Kayla, twin 13-year-old sister DJs. Spirit now serves 24 destinations nonstop from TPA, including Nashville, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, New Orleans and Dallas.
